Men Who Stomped, Kicked Turkeys Apparently Still on the Clock

Written by PETA | January 22, 2009

You probably remember when we unveiled our undercover investigation of Aviagen Turkeys, Inc., right before Thanksgiving. (Those horrifying images are hard to forget.) After seeing our video footage, Aviagen claimed to be working on improvements to its animal welfare policies and promised to fire all workers who were caught violating them.

However, Aviagen has not, to PETA’s knowledge, implemented any of PETA’s seven recommendations for making its turkeys less miserable. On top of that, we got a call 10 days ago from a whistleblower who let us know that at least three of the workers who were videotaped stomping, kicking, throwing, and maliciously killing turkeys are still being paid to handle live turkeys on Aviagen’s farms. I’d really like to say that I’m shocked, but after seeing what happens on Aviagen’s dark and dusty factory farms, I don’t think there’s anything the company could do that would surprise me.

We’ve pumped a letter out to Aviagen president Jihad Douglas demanding to know why these workers are still on the company’s payroll two months after PETA representatives personally provided company officials with our videotape as well as what, if any, steps the company has taken to stop cruelty to animals on its farms. Aviagen, since you seem to have no brilliant plans of your own to stop the abuse of turkeys on your factory farms, I suggest that you implement our seven-point-plan for animal welfare improvements as soon as possible.

Oh, and one more thing: Fire those workers … now!

Robert Lee you remind me the old story of the fool looking at the finger pointed towards the moon..

  • A. says:

I prefer not to give out my name or any other personal information because of the threat of identity theft nowadays so please excuse me if I don’t say who I am. I find the treatment of those turkeys absolutely horrific and uncalled for and don’t even get me started on the Aviagen company in total. I think the entire staff at that company should be locked up and the key lost permenantly! Those that abuse the turkeys and those who watch and do nothing about it. even the whistle blowers because they too stood around and did nothing to save those defenseless turkeys. There is nothing wrong with eating meat but if you can’t stand to eat it because of the video you watched here then you have the right to not eat it but stop shoving your “vegetarian diet” ideas onto those of us who enjoy our yummy meat! Here’s a novel idea just don’t buy your meat from places proven to use abuse in the killing of said animals by the hands of human animals! DUH! Also instead of gripimg and moaning about it online DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Call the West Virginia Police Department or email them with a copy of the video attached and make them arrest those people! If enough people callemail them they will be forced to act upon this matter! Ok that’s all I have to say. Thank you and stop buying Aviagen Farms turkeys or any other animal you know or suspect has died due to abuse!

WOW. Where do people learn behavior like this? I have never understood the indset of those who like to harm and torture animals. The faces of these men should not have been blocked out on the video. This allows them anonymity and the chance to abuse again. Horrifying.

  • lynda downie says:

Thank you for keeping on Aviagen Peta. Like Mike and Carla said our best defense is to refuse to buy any products of animal abuse.

  • Dawn says:

This is not surprising at all. Most animal killers do not get punished. He should have HIS face kicked in and see how the hillbilly like it.

  • Jess says:

    poor turkys

  • Alice Fraser says:

Why are these bastards still working when they tortured animals? They should get fired and go to jail. We need to change our animal laws and protect farm animals too and make these bastards go to jail. From Alice

  • Jill says:

Ashley I applaud you for trying. I don’t believe any of us should eat meat but the mere fact you are tryin gis all we animal loving vegetarians can ask of the meat eating public is to be aware make compassionate choices in your decisions to eat meat. However Free Range is not what it’s ‘cracked’ up to be. Remember all meat producers are out to make money. Learn about the truth and your determination to be vegetarian part of the time will become a reality for all of the time. Trust me I’ve been there. Good luck friend of the animals

  • Lisa says:

I am not a vegetarian. I have promised myself to eat vegetarian at least once a week. So that is a start. Last Christmas I bought a free range turkey. It was so much better tasting for obvious reasons. I will never go back to supporting the farms that treat the turkeys in such a disgusting way.

  • Ashley says:

It disgusts me to hear thisit upsets me that this is something that we will continue to see happen it makes me feel helpless because I cannot do anything to stop this. We can preach all we want about the greatness that is being a vegbecause it IS GREAT. However not everyone will quit eating meatwe as humans are carnivoirs. We are almost the same as any other meat eating animal. Lions Sharks Bears ect…the only difference is GREED. Those animals eat only what they need we kill billions of farm animals every year so fat people can stuff their faces with McDonalds. Its unesassary and wasteful. What we need to do is try and decrease the number of animals that we eat by elimtating factory farms we need more “Mom and Pop” farms againwe need to have laws that offer tougher punishments to people who abuse animals. We will not beable to make the entire world veg but WE CAN do something to protect these poor animals who can’t protect themselves. Chickens cannot help that they are born on a factory farm they can’t defend themselves against these cowardly red neck hill billys. BUT WE CAN.

  • Aneliese says:

Well that’s not surprising. To me anyways.

  • Carla says:

Unfortunatly this happens way too often and very few get notice. Chickenturkeys have little to no protection against these atrocities. But we can and like Mike said do not support these places stop the torture to stop eating them!!! Today and everyday… the birds are depending on us we must not let these people and the birds think we have forgotten about them. Go veg and then there will be peace.

  • Debbie Stone says:

All I ask is to let me and several of your other supporters have just 5 minutes with each of these jerks. I can guarantee that they will not want to ever see a turkey or any animal abused again.

  • Missy L says:

Can’t we all just go down to the Aviagen Turkey Plant and just find these discusting slim balls who like to tortures animals and do the same torture to them????? Who’s in with me???? Hmmmmmmm we really should think about doing this!

  • Lauren says:

I think it’s such a travesty that not only have they not faced any criminal action for this abuse they are still working away as normal. They are obvisouly very very sick individuals but because they abuse and beat animals and not humans they get away scot free. This world is so messed up.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

As awful as Aviagen are to an animal any slaughterhouse is an equally horrific place. Go veg and put these hellholes out of business. Robert There are still lots of MiniDV tape cameras in use and available new. But more importantly do hard drive or memory card cameras produce “footage”?

  • Meech! says:

Scum of the earth these “men”.

  • Vegan4animals says:

my god! it’s not like the turkeys don’t already suffer enough for their entire existence on a factory farm but then these jerks can do this to animals? I think these aholes should be given psychiatric evaluations and put in mental institutions AND jail. Any one who can do that to an animal is DISTURBED and must be locked way.

  • Robert Lee says:

Sorry to go off topic and yes they should remain fired but I’m confused. Technology seems to be taking us away from a tape based recording format yet we still call it video taping. Whats up with that?
