Who Are the Meat Men?

Written by PETA | June 5, 2008

Sounds like some sketchy-ass cult from a second-rate slasher flick, and, honestly, this recent segment on HBO about these shadowy figures in the horse racing industry kinda reinforces that impression. My favorite part in the video is the dude at the beginning of the second segment who’s all, “Yeah, I sold my horse to The Meat Men, but I didn’t ask where the horse was going, ‘cuz I didn’t want to know.” I imagine he’s the sort of guy who would hand his kids over to a babysitting service called The Black Market Organ Dealers, and then be all surprised when they came back without any kidneys. Check the two parts of the segment out here and here, then let me know what you think—it’s pretty well-known that the horse racing industry and the horse slaughter industry are more or less BFFs, but this footage really drives the point home in a powerful and (fair warning) pretty disturbing way. While we’re on the topic of horse racing, a bit of house cleaning: First, and most importantly, my colleague Jeff Kerr is giving a press conference in Louisville this morning to renew PETA’s call for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Eight Belles’ death, following the admission by Eight Belles’ trainer that the filly was given a powerful anti-inflammatory drug just hours before her catastrophic breakdown. More on that as it develops. Secondly, since we’re talking about breakdowns, here’s a list of all the thoroughbred deaths that have taken place since the Eight Belles incident on May 3. More than a dozen so far, and counting. And finally, here’s The New York Times on the widespread use of steroids in the horse racing business. So there you have it, Meat Men, high on-track death rates, and widespread steroid abuse. Classy stuff, horse racing industry. You guys are real winners. –JackPosted by Jack Shepherd, Marketing Coordinator

Now, wait here boys ‘n girls. Them Amish Folk is God Fearin Christians. Right good folks. They ain’t never done none of you harm. Lots of folks eat meat, and that tain’t no bad thing fer ‘em. Me, I can eat vegitables or meat – ‘n I like ‘em both. Fact is I ain’t got no problem kill’n my own animals, field dressin ‘em nor butchering em either. I dern’t know how you plan on changin thar way folks think? Ain’t that mind control? Sounds kina communist to me.

  • Ricardovitz says:

I’m all fer not doin no experiments on dumb ‘ol animals. We got us plenty of humans we can experiment on. They’s all jest sittin ’round in prisons eat’n taxpayer food and doin a bunch of good fer nothing. Right thar boys and girls we have a great source for organ transplants and clinical trials and whatever other whatnot. Dern prisons is way too crouded this ‘ll talke care of that and make them PETA folks right happier with thar rest of us meat eatin society.

Very good Betty and pass your words of wisdom on… Go Vegan

  • betty gale says:

so easy it was just get away from the animal industry do not eat them wear them or use them treat them like earthlings. be their guardian

  • Holly says:

Lisa Carusone that is very true…and you are very right in everything you say. I do thank very much the hard work of the good horse people who save lives every day and to those who save all other animals. But I still pray and work for change even in the most difficult places. PETA and other good groups work very hard for this great change. With the Amish it may be that change can only happen with the change of laws which they must follow. We work in the difficult places to make change like with the Amish and change can happen. It is worth our time and energy to work in places that no one would believe could change and when that change happens its the most rewarding of all. For All.. Thanks for your truth and wisdom. Go Vegan…

  • Lisa Carusone says:

C’mon guys the horse slaughterAmish connection has been going on for YEARS! For YEARS some very courageous horse people have made legislative changes on a state level to curtail these kinds of abuses. Visit websites for the Equine Protection Network and the Large Animal Protection Society both in PA for more info. The Amish treat animals like shit they’ve been doing it for years and they’ll keep doing it because they just don’t care to do otherwise. So tell your friends to skip vacations that take them to Amish country. Tell them to forget the cute little jars of jams the hex signs and the toys. And remember to thank the people in the equine rescue world for the tremendous work they’ve done to date.

  • Holly says:

How can I change your mind if I don’t understand what you are thinking. That is my approach with the Amish and all others who need change. I need to understand their thinking so they can understand mine. Go Vegan

  • Holly says:

Please read my words carefully. The Amish are not bad. They really dont get it. They need to change the way they think Just as dairy farmers do Angus meat raisers do Race Horse owners do Puppy Mill owners do and all others who take advantage of animals do. I dont think people are bad I think they need enlightenment and teaching to open their eyes and we need to help them. Most of us were born into family’s who ate meat Most of us who post here were at one time meat eaters None of you were bad You just did not realize it was something you should not do But you did learn Your eyes were opened Most of you are now Vegetarians or Vegans today which is wonderful and saves animals each day by your choice. It is no different for the others who are not yet enlightened. They need to learn a new way of thinking. Our job as Vegetarians and Vegans is to understand others and in doing so we can learn how to change the minds of others to save our animal friends. I in no way promote anyone who uses animals But I do very much want to understand them so I can work with their minds to change their thinking to save our animal friends and our earth. I have spent about 40 years of my life doing this as a vegetarianvegan and will continue to for the rest of my life. I am an old dog from the 60′s and learned a peaceful way of doing things by listening and learning from Indira Gandhi and Martin Luther King. I saw how a peaceful way and understand of others worked in action by protesting the War in Vietnam in Washington DC and race discrimination demonstrations with Martin Luther and his great wife also in Washington DC back in the 60s we worked very hard for change and it happened! We made a difference in our World! I was one of the first white woman in Maryland to marry a black man legally after the law changed in 1967 a bold move at the time. I have two children and we are very proud of our history in this change for understanding. I do have a great understanding and a very peaceful way of looking at how change can happen for the best of all humans and animals and our earth. I am proud of my history and all I have accomplished in my life time for animals and world peace and will continue to work hard for this peace for all with understanding and love. Go Vegan…

The Amish abuse animals FOR MONEY. They admit they do it for money. They admit to their greed. The “human helper” crap is for the DUMB TOURISTS. Who will swallow a stupid excuse and a lie and let the Amish go on abusing animals for MONEY.

  • keith says:

How much you being paid Holly. sound like a Amish stool pigeon to me !!!!

  • Holly says:

The Amish are not religious scum bags! They dont understand that animals are just like themand feel like them. They have been brought up for generations to look at animals as human helpers and are used for money makeing and food. They think if you use up a horse pulling them around or plowing their fields instead of letting the animal become a burden they sell it off make the most money they can out of the animal. They live by waste not want not…and to them they really do think thats ok as sad as I think that is and as horrable it is for all of their animals. These people like the all the others who use animals for human greed or entertainment need enlightenment. They need to learn that animals are much more than they have been taught they are. They need to find compassion for these animals beyond the carriage and field. They need to educated. just like all the meat eaters they need to learn…its a process and they will learn but it will take time to change themas it takes time to stop the dairy farmer or change someones mind about eating meat. we all are working hard for this change for our wonderful animal friends… I live near the Amish they are not bad people they just need a new way of looking at things to save the suffering of the animal… just like the meat eaters. I tell them all the time shame on you for your Puppy mills and your treatment of your horses… Go VEGAN

  • keith says:

Thank you ” Kelly” you have really done your homework on this one. I reckon those Amish cretins should be shown for what they are religious scumbags. What a disgusting state of affairs when the horse which was the the making of America is used and abused in such a vile manner.

There are many sites that cover the horse slaughter issue. This is one that describes how YOU can get involved httpwww.stophorseslaughter.com

  • kelly says:

So with vets like Melissa Reddick MAKING MONEY off horse abuse in the horse slaughter industry is it any wonder that the slimepit that is the AVMA supports horse slaughter? For just one account of many see httpwww.stophorseslaughter.comgailsletter.html The AVMA is a rotten diseased organization that is largely run by farm animal vets shilling for the FARMERS. And promoting and defending animal abuse.

  • kelly says:

The Amish also are running the “Meat Men” markets that the horseracing industry sells their horses to for slaughter. If you read the followup httpdealwithitdaily.blogspot.com200805nodayoffrunningfortheirlives.html “Vet to the Amish” Melissa Reddick just stands there while her clients the Amish beat abuse horses right in front of her. And worse. Meanwhile Reddick’s Sugarcreek vet practice that serves Amish dairy farmers is getting vet students from the Ohio State University trained brainwashed into performing this kind of activity. httpvet.osu.eduassetspdfdeptsprevMednewsletters2006VPMNewsletterWinter2006.pdf The vet schools are teaching students that animal abuse is ok.

I’ve never in my life seen anything as horrific as what I saw on this HBO special. My 13 yr old son and I were literally next to hysterical. What people do to animals in this world is beyond my grasp. Every time I see horses being hauled over the road I now worry where they are heading and for what. To hear that the Amish participate in the same abhorent activities is just too much to filter. Thank God for PETA if it wasn’t for the organization animals wouldn’t have a swinging chance in the world.

  • Netanya says:

The Amish were exposed as one of the worst abusers in Puppy Mills also Ophra’s recent rerunLisa Ling’s Puppy Mill Expose. Evidently their horses are not treated any better when their use is exhausted.

  • Holly says:

Its true its all true! PETA Thank You so much for bring this truth up front. This dirty little secret is the end result for most of these beautiful strong TB race horses and others. GET THEM PETA! I dont know how these horse owners can sleep at night… Go VEGAN

  • Gen says:

This made me sick then I bawled. I’ve wanted a horse for longer than I can remember and it sickens me that these people blindly throw their beautiful well bred horses away to be beaten killed and eaten. We should take this straight to the people running for president in the 08 elections and make it a point that if they help us they’ll have the vote of many animal lovers.

  • keith says:

I am really surprised the Amish can be so cruel? as Kelly has written. Perhaps its time to run some entries on them Jack ” thanks.”

  • kelly says:

The HBO investigation also revealed some familiar players in the Meat Men department. For those who follow the trail of the puppy mills we also see that the AMISH are involved in the terrible abuse of horses in slaughter. httpdealwithitdaily.blogspot.com200805nodayoffrunningfortheirlives.html The Amish do this to their own buggy horses too the ones you see in the cutesy tourist photos. And look at another player in the horse slaughter abuse the VET who allows the abuse to go on like not euthanizing a horse with a BROKEN LEG who is getting trampled. Why would she do this? Because her vet practice serves the AMISH DAIRY FARMS and she won’t do anything a client doesn’t like. Veterinarians are colluding with this abuse and cashing in too.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Found this on the internet According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners the racing industry suffers 730 catastrophic breakdowns a year or two a day. While all these horses may not be immediately killed I’m sure their injuries guarantee they’ll soon end up on a plate somewhere.
