New Technology Nabs Animal Abusers

Written by PETA | March 29, 2011

It just got harder to get away with cowardly acts of cruelty to animals. In New York City, abusers were recently convicted in two separate cases because DNA evidence from their victims linked them to their crimes. One case involved a cat named Scruffy who was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire, leaving the cat severely burned down to the muscles in his legs. The other case involved a cat named Madea, who was beaten so viciously that her lungs were lacerated and she had to be euthanized.

Collecting and using animals’ DNA to convict abusers is becoming more common among law-enforcement agencies. Authorities now even have a national DNA database of dogs used in fights to help them track down dogfighters. Penalties for cruelty to animals get harsher every year. And as more people become aware of “the link”—animal  abusers’ tendency to take their issues out on human victims as well—more people are coming forward and notifying authorities of cruelty, even when it means blowing the whistle on a friend or family member.

Big Girl
DNA testing wasn’t necessary to convict Big Girl’s abuser. PETA staffers found her, barely breathing, right in his backyard

If you suspect an animal is being abused, call the authorities right away. Animals can’t be saved—and their abusers can’t be brought to justice—if no one reports the crime.

This is horrible and I and glad that the people who did such things are getting some punishment for it. But seriously no I feel sick to even imagine the pain these poor creatures went through.Just hope people realize that they are doing such things to living creatures who feel pain, anguish and grief very much as we do.

  • Jackie says:

Glad to hear these scum are getting what they deserve.

  • Tracy McFadin says:

There is no amount of torture that could be done to the abuser of “Big Girl” that would satisfy me. I hope the abuser gets prison time which probably will not happen but if it does I hope the other inmates make his life a living hell.

I agree with Leanne… People shoudnt keep animal if they abuse it , animal are like human , wanting peace to live without any abuse.. There shall be an animal abuse registery..

  • Peace people says:

I agree with Leanne… this is so cruel to do animal, they are like a human and its not fair to abuse animals because they are like a human and animals have to have the right to live in peace..

  • Freddy says:

I hope the person who did that to that poor dog was punished severely

I cannot believe that last photo of that poor dog, to think it was still alive and in that terrible state. It must have been suffering so much, it breaks my heart that anyone could do that to an animal. I’d love to have that man in a locked room for 5 minutes, i’d tear his crown jewels off with my teeth – and then laugh!

  • Tammy says:

Can PETA get the Canadian government to do the same, at the very least??? PLEASE!!!

  • Tammy says:

@Leanne – Yes – there should be an animal abuse registry!!! Good idea!! And long jail sentences!!! Just as if it was done to a person – at least people can fight back – animal can’t do that!!! This ‘man’ should be put in a tank full of piranhas!! and ripped to shreds!!!

  • Tammy says:

@Marydavis I feel exactly the same way!!! And I think animals should have the same rights as humans by law!! It’s hard for me to even comprehend this!!! I’ve been crying all day with the things I’ve seen on this site!!! But I feel morally obligated to look and act!!! My heart and soul break everytime but I must do it!!!

  • Marydavis says:

Oh, I cried and cried and cried yesterday and today! People need much more stiffer jail sentences for this. Like 20-40-years. Poor baby!! Burned to a crisp. The pain, screaming, bleeding, it was horrible for her. What a nice pet she could of made for him. I am tearing up with my eyes again so am ready for a good old fashioned cry and it’s gonna last a long time-I’m so upset!

  • Leanne says:

There needs to be an animal abuse registery in all the countries – so we know what sicko freaks that abuse animals walks amongst us!
