Dog Saved From Drowning! And Two More Rescues
Members of the hardworking PETA-supported Animal Rahat team in India will do just about anything to rescue animals—from dogs and donkeys to cobras and cows. No animal is too small or too formidable to receive a helping hand. Here are three of Animal Rahat’s rescues from last month:
This poor dog was perhaps in the most dire situation. He had fallen into a 10-foot-deep water tank, which was half-filled with rainwater, and was literally paddling for his life. When Animal Rahat’s fieldworkers reached the scene, the exhausted dog was just barely able to hold his head above the filthy water. Using a sturdy net, Animal Rahat’s staff fished him out of the tank. Although scared and shaken, the dog wasn’t injured, and he ran off back to his village and family as soon as he was deposited on dry land.
This scared and panicking crow was found hanging from a tree branch after becoming entangled in kite string. Working carefully, Animal Rahat’s fieldworker cut the string with the aid of a long bamboo stick, caught the terrified crow in a bag, and gently lowered him to the ground. The fieldworker was then able to cut away the remaining string, which was wrapped around the bird’s legs. The crow was understandably stressed by the ordeal but wasn’t injured, and after being given some multivitamin drops and water, he was released and flew happily away.
And then there was this snake, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time! Animal Rahat’s fieldworker sprang into action after he received a call about this little snake, who had made her way into the caller’s house. When the fieldworker reached the scene, he found the snake—who was probably more terrified of the humans than they were of her—hiding behind a door. The fieldworker caught the snake in a cloth bag and took her to one of Animal Rahat’s veterinary assistants, who identified the snake as a nonpoisonous banded kukri and checked her for injuries. After getting a clean bill of health, the snake was released back into her natural habitat, the jungle.
