If You Eat a Hamburger, You Are Literally Eating a Cow’s Heart

We all know that hamburgers contribute to heart attacks, but as it turns out, there’s another reason why they might make your heart stop. Burgers and other processed beef contain cow hearts.

As Fortune explained in a recent article, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) allows beef producers to use “beef heart meat,” defined as “cardiac muscle trimmed from the ventricular wall of a beef heart.” However, the USDA offers a different definition for “beef hearts” and says that those can’t be used.

So people can eat all the “beef heart meat” they want. But not “beef hearts.” Because that would just be wrong.

Have a heart instead of eating one and try a veggie burger today.
