On Thursday, PETA supporters and an adorable, giant unicorn will prove just how magical vegan pizza can be by handing out over 1,000 free slices covered in tasty, gooey dairy-free cheese outside Domino’s restaurants around the country for a National Pizza Party—including at Oakland’s 314 Broadway location. The piping-hot promo marks the kickoff of a PETA campaign called “Vegan Cheese, Please” that has customers who shun dairy for environmental, health, lactose intolerance, cruelty, and religious reasons calling on Domino’s to add vegan cheese to its U.S. menu, as the company has already done in Switzerland, Australia, Spain, Germany, and the U.K.

In the lead-up to the launch, which will also take place in Colorado, Florida, New York, Oregon, and Tennessee, for starters, PETA unicorns have been quietly taste-testing vegan pies to Domino’s customers in locations across the country—all of whom said they’d order dairy-free cheese if the restaurant offered it.

“Vegan pizza covered in melty, mouthwatering cheese is deliciously indulgent and lets cows keep the milk for their calves,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges Domino’s to give the people what they want: vegan cheese on the menu.”

Where: Outside Domino’s, 314 Broadway, Oakland

When: Thursday, June 26, 12 noon

Why: Cows can recognize the faces of their friends in photographs and mourn when a loved one dies or when they’re separated from each other, yet in the dairy industry, female cows are forcibly impregnated and have their beloved calves stolen from them so the milk meant to nourish their babies can be sold to humans. Newborn males are slaughtered for veal, while female calves endure the same fate as their mothers until their bodies wear out and they’re sent to slaughter.
