Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding news that the recipient of a transplanted heart made of titanium has survived 100 days—well past the amount of time of any patient with a heart taken from a pig or other animal, and nearly as long or longer than those who received other organs from animals:
PETA applauds any scientific advancement that leaves the organs of other animals inside them, where they belong. But enacting presumed consent laws and cleaning up the wasteful organ procurement system, which wastes up to 28,000 organs annually, should be the first choice. It is a far easier and cheaper solution to the shortage of human organs, and human-to-human transplants aren’t experimental—they are known to save lives.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
