PETA has long known that meat hot dogs come with a slew of unsavory ingredients, including dangerous carcinogens, heart-stopping cholesterol and saturated animal fats, glass shards, rodent parts, and a lot of cruelty. That’s why the group set out to find the Top Five Vegan Hot Dogs in America in the run-up to the Fourth of July, and The Patt Morrison Baja Vegan Dog—complete with guacamole, tomatoes, and onions—at Pink’s has grabbed the number three spot in the nation. The superb Baja is named for Pulitzer Prize–winning Los Angeles Times columnist, NPR commentator, and vegetarian Patt Morrison. Read the rave reviews here.

“The Fourth of July marks the birth of our nation, so when it comes to celebrating it with a couple of hot dogs, go vegan and give your whole body a reason to cheer,” says PETA Special Projects Manager Alicia Woempner. “After all, if you take the carcinogens, body parts, and fear out of a meat hot dog, you’re pretty much left with an empty bun.”

Rounding out the winners in descending order are the Holiday Dog at The Vegan Hot Dog Cart in Orlando, Fla.; the Rockaway Beach at Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace in Columbus, Ohio; the Vegan House Special at Dreamy Weenies in New Orleans; and the Soy Veggie Dog at Mustard’s Last Stand in Denver and Boulder, Colo. Honorable mention goes to Dogtown in Rochester, N.Y., and DC-3 in Washington, D.C.

All the winners will receive a framed certificate and a letter of congratulations from PETA.
