Telluride, Colo. – Below, please see a statement from PETA Foundation veterinarian (and Telluride resident) Christine Capaldo in response to reports that Telluride Ski Resort has stopped horse-drawn sleigh rides after horses pulling a sleigh got spooked by New Year’s fireworks and the sleigh tipped over:

As PETA alerted Telluride’s mayor and town council last year, forcing skittish horses to haul heavy carriages in a busy resort town is a disaster waiting to happen. Telluride Ski Resort made the right call in stopping sleigh rides, and PETA hopes to see the town follow suit and keep horse-drawn carriages permanently off the road.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment,” and more information about horse-drawn carriages is available here.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?” READ MORE
