Below, please see a statement from PETA Foundation veterinarian (and Telluride resident) Christine Capaldo in response to reports that Telluride Ski Resort has stopped horse-drawn sleigh rides after horses pulling a sleigh got spooked by New Year’s fireworks and the sleigh tipped over:

As PETA alerted Telluride’s mayor and town council last year, forcing skittish horses to haul heavy carriages in a busy resort town is a disaster waiting to happen. Telluride Ski Resort made the right call in stopping sleigh rides, and PETA hopes to see the town follow suit and keep horse-drawn carriages permanently off the road.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment,” and more information about horse-drawn carriages is available here.
