In the wake of the new Mississippi law that allows business owners to discriminate against members of the LGBT community, Jesus People for Animals—PETA’s Christian outreach division—plans to run a billboard in Jackson that quotes John 13:34, proclaiming, “Love one another, as I have loved you,” and advises, “Show compassion for all. Go vegan.”

“PETA’s billboard sends the simple message that people of all faiths, or no faith, can make the world a kinder place by opening their hearts to everyone, including animals who end up on a dinner plate,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Learning to show compassion to ‘the least of them’—the gentle animals who are mutilated and killed by the billions for food—could also teach us to be respectful and kind to human beings who may be different from us.”

People are asking, “What would Jesus think about this law?” and PETA is asking, “What would Jesus eat, given the rampant cruelty on today’s factory farms?” PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that in the meat and dairy industries, piglets have their tails and testicles cut off without being given painkillers, chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they’re still conscious, fish are cut open while they’re still alive on the decks of fishing boats, and calves are taken away from their mothers within hours of birth. Each person who goes vegan spares more than 100 animals every year daily suffering and a terrifying death.
