Jacksonville, Fla. – To celebrate the start of fall, PETA has scoured the country for the best and heartiest vegan chili dishes—and House of Leaf & Bean has landed a spot on the list for its Vegan Chili Bowl, a protein-packed mixture of beans and veggies topped with freshly made tofu and served over spicy rice.
“Vegan chili is the ultimate comfort food, and it comes with the comforting thought that no animals were harmed to make it,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA celebrates House of Leaf & Bean for helping people tuck into their favorite foods without the cruelty or the cholesterol.”
PETA notes that vegan meat sales increased 148% in 2020 compared to the year before and that 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals in 2021.
Other honorees include Plant Bae in Montgomery, Alabama; Arles & Boggs Vegan Eatery in Wallingford, Connecticut; The Social Vegan in Lexington, Kentucky; The Grit in Athens, Georgia; and Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers many vegan chili recipes on its website.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
