Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

With egg prices sky-high, causing people to seek alternatives, and bird flu ravaging the country—which has resulted in the killing of over 30 million chickens in 2025 alone—PETA sent a letter this morning to mayor Laura Pfrommer suggesting that she change the name of Egg Harbor Township to Just Egg Harbor Township, to raise awareness that vegan eggs like the popular brand Just Egg, are healthy, delicious, and widely available.

Choosing a vegan egg such as Just Egg—a tasty, cholesterol-free substitute—is an eggcellent way to avoid exotic influenzas and a host of other diseases that spread easily on filthy egg factory farms. Vegan eggs are also the kind choice, as they spare chickens a life of misery crammed together by the thousands in tiny wire battery cages or on shed floors, unable to even spread their wings, and ultimately have their throats slit when their egg production wanes.

“Chickens are inquisitive, intelligent animals who form friendships, love and care for their young, and roost in trees, but we not only take their eggs from them but all those simple pleasures, too,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is asking Mayor Pfrommer to embrace this opportunity to show Egg Harbor’s residents how they can stay safe and stay kind by choosing delicious vegan eggs.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal is Someone and offers free vegan starter kits to those looking to make the compassionate switch.

The Honorable Laura Pfrommer

Mayor of Egg Harbor Township

Dear Mayor Pfrommer:

Greetings! I’m writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals—PETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters worldwide, including hundreds of thousands in New Jersey, with a suggestion that could help residents amid surging egg prices: Perhaps you remember when Hot Springs, New Mexico, changed its name to Truth or Consequences and everyone loved it? Would you likewise consider changing the name of Egg Harbor Township to Just Egg Harbor Township, if only for one eggstra special day, to highlight the fact that vegan eggs exist? To celebrate, we’d happily supply a fabulous Just Egg breakfast with plant-based bacon for you and your staff and guests and offer samples to visitors at the next council meeting. We’d also gladly donate 100 Just Egg packets of vegan eggs to the community organization or nonprofit of your choice.

Just Egg is a plant-based egg substitute made from mung beans. Each serving contains 5 grams of protein and no cholesterol. It has been praised for convincingly replicating the texture, taste, and cooking characteristics of chicken eggs. Just Egg, which is widely available at major retailers and restaurants nationwide, has sold the equivalent of over 500 million eggs since its launch. Basically, our point is that Just Egg is hard to beat.

Although the township’s name derives from the shorebird and waterfowl eggs that were once found covering nearby meadows, most people today associate the word “egg” with those laid by chickens, most of whom are raised on filthy factory farms and are among the most abused animals on the planet, from the moment their beaks are cut off to the moment they are hung upside down and their throats are slit. Everyone can agree that it would be cruel to confine cats and dogs to cages so small that they’re unable even to turn around, to mutilate parts of their sensitive faces, or to dunk them into scalding-hot water—often while they’re still conscious. But these things are done every single day to vast numbers of chickens who are used for eggs.

In recent months, bird flu has ravaged the country and sent egg prices soaring. The World Health Organization describes the risk of bird flu spreading to humans as an “enormous concern.” And even without the threat of bird flu, research shows that eggs, which have high levels of cholesterol, are harmful to human health. They increase the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, so they really aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

We hope you’ll consider changing the town’s name to raise awareness of the many benefits of choosing healthy vegan eggs.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid Newkirk

President
