PETA has selected the 2019 winners of the Top 10 Golden Burger Awards from restaurants across the country—and Fresh Cafe & Market has nabbed a spot on the list for its Original Veggie Burger.

Fresh Cafe & Market delivers fresh food and juice to the Des Moines metro area, serves vegan treats at the Downtown Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings all summer long, and will soon be taking online orders for delivery across the country. Its award-winning burger is made fresh from whole foods—including quinoa, brown rice, carrots, mushrooms, and more—and flavored with a secret spice blend. It’s topped with a house-made cashew crema plus all the trimmings on a sprouted whole wheat bun. A gluten-free version is available upon request.

“From its veggie-packed patty to its sprouted bun, this tasty vegan burger puts a fresh spin on an American classic,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “All the satisfying burgers on PETA’s national Top 10 list are proving that compassion can be a delicious business.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is the human-supremacist view that other species are nothing more than commodities. The group notes that sensitive, gentle cows destined to become hamburger patties are transported to slaughterhouses in all weather extremes. Then, they’re strung up by one leg and their throat is slit, sometimes while they’re still conscious. Eating meat and other animal-derived foods has been conclusively linked to a higher risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.

Fresh Cafe & Market will receive a framed certificate. Other winners include the Bac’n Cheezeburger at Arlo’s Curbside Kitchen in Austin, Texas; the Black Bean Burger from Sunspot in Knoxville, Tennessee; the Whiskey BBQ Mushroom Burger at Kahiau’s Bakery & Cafe in Virginia Beach, Virginia; and the Big Wac at Green New American Vegetarian in Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona.
