Please see the following statement from PETA Science Advisor for Primate Issues Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding Decatur County, Georgia, officials’ decision to join the City of Bainbridge residents in seeking a temporary restraining order against Safer Human Medicine’s (SHM) plans to build a monkey warehouse capable of caging 30,000 primates while residents’ ongoing case against the proposal continues:
Bainbridge residents have long fought a pitched legal battle against Safer Human Medicine’s plans to build a monstrous, import-and-breeding monkey warehouse in their town. But reinforcements have arrived. Decatur County yesterday officially joined with residents seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent construction while their case continues against the City of Bainbridge and this greedy corporation for their collusive efforts to push the dangerous project forward without the transparency required by the state Open Meetings Act. This backroom deal—built on deception and a blatant disregard for the rights of Bainbridge residents—undermines the very process it claims to follow and makes the agreements that paved the way for SHM’s reckless project invalid. PETA stands shoulder to shoulder with the courageous residents fighting to protect their community and welcomes county officials who are ready to confront SHM’s misconduct head-on.
