We’ve all been there—those big puppy eyes staring up at us while we snack, silently begging for a bite. But not all human foods are safe for our canine companions. The good news? Some of the things you already have in your kitchen are not only safe for dogs, but actually good for them! These tasty treats can offer health benefits and a bit of variety to your pup’s diet. Let’s dig into the dog-friendly snacks you can feel great about sharing. (Keep in mind—all dogs are different and may have allergies or intolerances to certain foods, so it’s always best to start slow!)

Carrots
Rich in vitamin A, vitamin K, and calcium, carrots help support healthy teeth, bones, and eyesight. They can also act as a natural dental chew, scraping away excess plaque and tartar. Frozen carrots can also be a soothing snack for teething puppies.
Apples
Apples are a sweet, crunchy treat that many dogs enjoy, and they’re full of health benefits. They’re packed with fiber and vitamins A and C, which aid digestion, immune function, and overall health. Just be sure to remove the core and seeds before sharing!
Blueberries
Blueberries are a bite-sized superfood that’s just as good for dogs as they are for humans. They’re loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, which can help boost your dog’s immune system and brain, heart, skin, and joint health. Plus, their small size makes them a perfect healthy, low-calorie treat.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a nutritious, tummy-friendly treat high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. The vitamins A, C, and E support healthy skin, coat, and immune function. It’s also great for dogs who are constipated. (Note: Make sure you only feed your dog pure pumpkin with no added sugar, salt, fat, or spices, as those can be unhealthy and even dangerous.)
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are packed with fiber, vitamins A, B6, and C, and minerals like potassium—all of which support digestive health, immune function, and strong muscles. The beta-carotene in sweet potatoes is also beneficial for vision. Plus, their natural sweetness makes them a hit with pups!
Green Beans
Green beans are a crunchy, low-calorie snack that’s perfect for dogs watching their weight. They’re full of fiber, vitamins A, C, and K, and important minerals like iron and calcium, which support overall health and strong bones. Serve them plain—steamed, chopped, or even frozen—for a healthy treat your pup will enjoy!
Watermelon
Watermelon is a hydrating, refreshing treat that’s safe for dogs in moderation. It’s low in calories and packed with vitamins A, B6, and C, plus plenty of water to help keep your dog cool and quenched on hot days. Just be sure to remove the seeds and rind before serving!
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a nutritious option for dogs when served in moderation and as part of a balanced diet. It’s rich in soluble fiber, which supports healthy digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Just ensure it’s plain and fully cooked—no added sugar, milk, or flavorings.
Peanut Butter
As an occasional treat, plain peanut butter—unsalted and unsweetened—can be an excellent source of protein, healthy fats, and vitamins B3 and E. These nutrients support dogs’ energy, metabolism, nervous system health, heart health, and muscle health. You can even smear some peanut butter in a puzzle feeder to turn treat time into a stimulating exercise!
Just make sure that the peanut butter you choose doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
Banana
Bananas are a sweet, vitamin-rich snack that many dogs enjoy. They’re loaded with potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C, which support muscle function, energy, metabolism, and immune health. Given in moderation, bananas make a healthy alternative to processed treats.
