These Black Women-Owned Vegan Companies Are Taking the Culinary and Beauty Scene by Storm

Published by Rebecca Maness.

If you want to use the power of your dollars to support women of color, consider supporting these brands that are also doing great things for animals. All of these Black-owned businesses are women-led and animal-friendly—and they’re taking the vegan scene by storm.

Maya’s Cookies

Maya Madsen founded Maya’s Cookies in 2015 and has since created tons of gourmet flavors, including the Famous “Everything” Cookie, which contains chocolate chips, pretzels, oatmeal, pecans, butterscotch chips, and marshmallows. This vegan bakery has a San Diego storefront, but you can also get its tasty treats delivered right to your doorstep. Oh, and did we mention that Maya’s Cookies is a PETA Business Friend?

Slutty Vegan

PETA Honorary Director Pinky Cole rapidly expanded this vegan burger joint from a food truck to a full-fledged chain with three locations in the Atlanta area and launched a partnership with Shake Shack. Slutty Vegan’s burgers come loaded with cow-friendly vegan cheese and the signature egg-free Slut Sauce—all served on a vegan Hawaiian bun.

Voagies

Off the success of Slutty Vegan, Pinky Cole expanded her compassionate cuisine empire with Voagies, Atlanta’s first all-vegan hoagie shop. At this spot, customers can get everything from a classic vegan “turkey” sub to a hearty meatball marinara sandwich to a flavorful Jamaican jerk “chicken” wrap.

Stuff I Eat

Stuff I Eat is an Inglewood, California, gem led by the gregarious and inspirational Chef Babette. Its vegan and mostly organic menu is inspired by soul food with a healthier twist and features hearty dishes like the Breakfast Burrito alongside lighter fare such as the SIE (Stuff I Eat) Salad. No matter what you try here, you can be sure that it will be good for you and animals.

Plant Culture

Formerly called Hella Nuts, Plant Culture is a Black woman–owned, mother-daughter–led business in Oakland, California, founded by Mieko Scott and Kami Quiñones. The duo went vegan together in 2018 and has been transforming the foods they love into healthier, vegan versions ever since. They create their signature ground walnut meat, available at select health food stores in California, and host immersive vegan cooking experiences—including hands-on classes and tastings—that bring their passion for vegan cuisine to the community.

Tubby’s Taste Vegan Cookies for Everyone

Danielle “Tubby” Tubbs looked to her Jamaican roots to create Tubby’s Taste, a Black womenowned dessert company featuring cookies in bold flavors like coconut, mango, rum, pineapple, and hibiscus. Her cookies can be shipped nationwide, and you can even sign up for a monthly subscription.

Rizos Curls

Founded by Julissa Prado, PETA Business Friend Rizos Curls offers award-winning hair and scalp care products, plus styling tools and accessories. Their formulas are the secret weapon for shiny, bouncy, frizz-free curls.

Beauty Bakerie

Intersectionality Matters

Supporting Black women-owned vegan businesses isn’t just about great food or beauty products; it’s about making a real difference. When you support these companies, you’re helping to protect animals and uplift Black communities.

These women are leading the way, showing us all what it means to respect our fellow animals—because every animal is someone. From mother cows who nurture their babies to playful, curious mice, animals have lives, feelings, and families just like humans do. Being vegan is about doing our best every day to choose kindness, from the meals we eat to the products we buy.
