Sec. 10-73. – Disposition of impounded animals.
Generally, any impounded animal not under observation for rabies that is not claimed within seven days of the date of impoundment shall be disposed of in a manner approved by the chief of police.
(1) Adoption. No animal shall be released for adoption without a written agreement from the adopter guaranteeing that the animal will be sterilized within 30 days of adoption or within 30 days of sexual maturity of the animal.
(2) Deposit/fee. Upon the adoption of any animal from the shelter, the adopter shall pay a fee that shall include a deposit to go towards the sterilization of the animal, the required rabies inoculation and other vaccinations as needed, plus an administration fee. The deposit shall be paid to the licensed veterinarian chosen by the adopter provided that the licensed veterinarian will accept the deposit voucher and reimbursement procedures. It shall be the responsibility of the pet owner to assume any and all costs incurred over and above the deposit fee. Said deposit fee shall be reimbursed to the adopter if evidence from a licensed veterinarian can be provided that the animal had been sterilized prior to adoption.
(3) Privately owned animals in possession of the animal shelter. The requirements of this section shall not apply to any privately owned animal in possession of the animal shelter, provided the owner or person in charge of the animal presents evidence that the animal is the property of that person.
