Sec. 5-75. – Adoption and redemption of animals.
(b) Before any such animal may be redeemed or adopted, arrangements shall be made for the animal to be neutered or spayed, with the following exceptions:
(1) A dog or cat claimed by the owner before the end of the third consecutive day or at the end of the quarantine period shall not be required to be neutered or spayed before its release to the owner;
(2) If the dog or cat is under the age of six (6) months if female, or eight (8) months if male, sterilization shall be delayed until the female is six (6) to eight (8) months of age, and the male is eight (8) to ten (10) months of age;
(3) Upon request of a licensed veterinarian, and for a valid medical reason, such as the relative immaturity of a particular animal or breed, or the presence of a medical problem or condition which makes surgery at that time inadvisable, in which event the animal shelter shall extend the time limits within which the animal must be sterilized.
