Spay/Neuter
Lander County, Nevada
6.08.120– Adoption policy.
The special officer may offer apparently healthy impounded dogs for adoption at the end of the claiming period upon the following conditions:
A. Payment of an adoption fee and the appropriate tag fee;
B. Presentment of a valid rabies tag or certificate from a licensed veterinarian stating that the dog has been inoculated with suitable vaccines for the prevention of rabies and additional infectious diseases.
C. Proof that the animal has been spayed or neutered.
D. A nonspayed or nonneutered animal may be adopted by providing a signed acknowledgement that the animal will be spayed or neutered and proof, as set forth below, provided to the special officer not less than ninety days after adoption:
1. Upon the adoption of a nonspayed or nonneutered animal, the dog control facility will provide to the person adopting the animal a certificate to be completed regarding the spaying or the neutering of the nonspayed or nonneutered adoptive animal.
2. Either the completed certificate showing that the animal was spayed or neutered or proof of an appointment with a veterinarian for spaying or neutering must be returned to the facility no later than the thirty-first day following the adoption. If proof of an appointment is utilized, then the completed certificate showing that the animal was spayed or neutered must be returned to the facility no later than the sixty-first day following said proof of a veterinary appointment for spaying or neutering.
6.08.290– Suspension of spaying or neutering requirements—When—Intent.
Any and all spaying or neutering requirements under this chapter may be suspended by the special officer due to the lack of a veterinarian or veterinary clinic within the county or other grounds of impossibility or great difficulty and/or prohibitive expense. It is not the intent of this title to in any way encourage the destruction of an animal because it might be cheaper or more convenient to destroy the animal than to comply with spaying or neutering requirements. The intent of this title is to encourage the humane treatment of dogs, cats and other pets and to discourage the destruction of unwanted dogs, eat, or pets where other reasonable means are available.
