Spay/Neuter
Carbondale, Colorado
Sec. 7-6-160. – Owner notification; destruction of unredeemed dogs.
Not later than 48 hours after the impounding of any dog, the owner thereof, if known, shall be notified. If the owner of the dog cannot be ascertained within such period, a notice shall be published in the next issue of a newspaper of general circulation within the Town, which notice shall describe such dog and place of confinement. Any dog not claimed within the latter of five days after confirmed receipt of notice to the owner or, failing successful notice to the owner, within seven days after the date of publication of such notice, may be transferred to the care of an animal adoption agency or may be humanely destroyed by euthanasia. Any animal adoption agency that receives an animal from the Town shall spay or neuter the animal before releasing the animal for adoption unless a veterinarian determines that it is medically inadvisable to do so. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if, in the opinion of a veterinarian, or the animal shelter supervisor if a veterinarian is not available, the animal is experiencing extreme pain or suffering, the Chief of Police may authorize euthanasia as soon as the Chief of Police has exhausted all reasonable efforts to contact the owner of the animal. If the dog has a current I.D. or license tags from the Town or any other jurisdiction, no euthanasia shall occur except on the advice of a licensed veterinarian.
Sec. 7-6-450. – Spay or neuter.
Although not required, each owner of any cat in the Town is encouraged to spay or neuter such cat.
