Tethering/Chaining

Sec. 5-1-3. – Prohibited acts and conditions.

D. Chaining and tethering; miscellaneous provisions of dog care. The following acts are hereby prohibited:

  1. Chaining or tethering a dog for more than three (3) continuous hours and no more than six (6) hours in any twenty-four hour period. However, a dog may be chained or tethered for up to eight (8) hours, provided the chain or tether is at least ten (10) feet in length attached to a pulley or trolley mounted on a cable which is also at least ten (10) feet in length and mounted no more than seven (7) feet above ground.
  2. Any chain or tether used on a dog shall be at least ten (10) feet in length and placed in an area to prevent the animal from becoming entangled with any item or other animal in its surrounding area or to allow the chained animal from reaching public property or property owned by another.
  3. No chain or tether shall exceed one-eighth of the animal’s body weight.
  4. A female dog in estrus (in heat) must not be chained or tethered at any time.
