  5. The Best and Worst Frozen Yogurt Chains, Ranked by PETA
Vegan Frozen Yogurt

The Best and Worst Frozen Yogurt Chains, Ranked by PETA

PETA and everyone else knows that vegan frozen yogurt—the kind made without abusing and milking gentle cows until their bodies are destroyed—is the best dessert, hands down. But not all frozen yogurt shops are created equal.

PETA has assessed the animal friendliness of frozen yogurt chains across the U.S. The resulting letter grades run the gamut from “A” (for chains that offer lots of sorbet and frozen yogurt options made from vegan milk—like cashew milk, almond milk, or coconut milk) to “F” (for those that have no vegan options whatsoever).

This ranking is dynamic, and the information will change as we receive updates from chains or learn of new menu options.

GRADE A

16 Handles

This New York–based frozen yogurt spot has partnered with Oatly to offer creative oat milk–based flavors such as iced latte, cinnamon bun, and chai tea as well as basics like chocolate and vanilla. If oat milk isn’t your jam, it also offers vanilla frozen yogurt with both soy and almond bases as well as nearly a dozen vegan sorbet options. It’s never been easier—or more delicious—to help save cows.

Pinkberry

Pinkberry carries only two sorbet options: peach and tropical mango. But the Southern California chain offers six vegan frozen yogurt options that are all coconut milk–based (including the unique vegan cold brew flavor).

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt

Tutti Frutti offers many flavors of sorbet and nondairy frozen yogurt. Its frozen yogurt is soy-based, and it comes in flavors like banana milk and peanut butter. However, some of the flavors still contain dairy.

U-Swirl

U-Swirl offers eight tasty sorbet flavors and two vegan frozen yogurt options—chocolate and vanilla, made with Silk almond milk.

Red Mango

Customers can find a handful of “Sorbetto” and “Fro-No” flavors at Red Mango. The majority of the flavors offered are fruit flavors, but the chain does also carry chocolate–peanut butter and gingersnap Fro-No. Unfortunately, some Fro-No flavors contain honey.

TCBY

TCBY has a decent number of vegan sorbet and vegan frozen yogurt flavors, like chocolate-almond and coconut. It also offers two oat milk flavors: latte and wedding cake.

FroyoWorld

This chain offers four flavors of almond milk frozen yogurt: peanut butter, piña colada, black raspberry, and s’mores.

Orange Leaf

Orange Leaf has three vegan Dole Whip flavors and several other fruit-based sorbet offerings. Many of its smoothies can also be made vegan with almond milk.

GRADE B-

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt

Menchie’s offers vegan sorbet and some Dole Whip flavors, along with frozen yogurt flavors like Vegan Dark Chocolate Mousse Made From Almond Milk and Vegan Salted Caramel Made With Almond Milk.

GRADE F

Golden Spoon

Golden Spoon offers only one sorbet flavor and has zero vegan frozen yogurt options.

Bananas Smoothies and Frozen Yogurt

Bananas Smoothies and Frozen Yogurt doesn’t carry any sorbet flavors or vegan frozen yogurt options.

Freshens

Freshens may offer vegan smoothies, but it carries zero vegan sorbet or frozen yogurt options.

GRADE DEFERRED

Any chain listed here is in the process of making some changes that will have an impact on the grade we give it. Be sure to check back for updates!

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
