As part of a nationwide campaign to encourage people to see animals as individuals and leave them off dinner plates, PETA has erected a pro-vegan billboard featuring a cow next door to Leo’s BBQ.

“Sensitive, gentle cows are unique individuals who value their lives and don’t deserve to be killed for a fleeting taste of flesh,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard is urging meat-eaters to opt for sizzling vegan meats and other fare that no animal had to suffer and die for.”

Cows in the meat industry are often confined to cramped, filthy feedlots without protection from the elements. Calves are castrated and branded without pain relief. At the slaughterhouse, workers shoot cows in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throat—often while they’re still conscious and able to feel pain.

Animal agriculture is responsible for nearly a fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions. More than 80% of the Amazon rainforest that’s been cleared since 1970 is used for grazing or for growing food for cattle who are ultimately slaughtered for meat, and ranchers are to blame for setting the fires that recently burned millions of acres in the Amazon.

The billboard is located next to Leo’s BBQ at 3631 N. Kelley Ave.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
