Hornby Street shoppers will get a surprise on Friday evening from PETA supporters and members of Direct Action Everywhere’s Vancouver chapter, who will march to the local Canada Goose store in order to urge shoppers not to buy the retailer’s coats made with coyote fur and goose down.

When:    Friday, November 15, 5 p.m. (The march will begin at 6 p.m.)

Where:    The protest will begin at Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby St., Vancouver. Then, protesters will march to Canada Goose, 701 W. Georgia St., Vancouver.

“Every Canada Goose coat represents the suffering of coyotes who were caught in painful steel traps and geese who were violently killed,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on shoppers to steer clear of Canada Goose as long as it continues to profit from animal suffering and death.”

Trapped coyote mothers desperate to get back to their starving pups have tried to chew off their own legs to escape, and many trapped animals succumb to the elements, blood loss, infection, or attacks by predators before trappers return to kill them. Ducks and geese used for down are shipped in all weather extremes to slaughterhouses, where their throats are cut and their bodies dunked into defeathering tanks.

Following a PETA complaint and a subsequent U.S. Federal Trade Commission investigation, Canada Goose has stopped claiming that its standards ensure that its suppliers don’t abuse animals.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
