Expectant mothers are typically instructed to stay away from seafood dishes because of their high mercury levels and risk of contamination causing foodborne illnesses—so to help pregnant women safely enjoy National Seafood Month (October), PETA has compiled a list of vegan seafood dishes that are healthy, humane, and safe for all diners.

Many of these items include the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, which is recommended for pregnant and nursing mothers—but instead of coming from fish flesh, vegan DHA is derived from algae (where fish get it in the first place):

“The market has exploded with vegan fish dishes that are perfect for expectant mothers, people who have allergies, and those who simply want a more sustainable and humane meal,” says PETA Director Danielle Katz. “PETA encourages all diners to celebrate sea life this October by enjoying a delicious fishless fillet or crabless cake.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—has also compiled roundups of America’s Top 10 Vegan Seafood Dishes as well as healthy vegan recipes packed with omega-3s, from spicy sesame noodles to cauliflower “wings” to chia seed pudding. Pregnant women can find more resources here.
