Target, Ulta Beauty, Kohl’s, and More Brands Ditch Badger Hair

Here’s an ugly side of the beauty industry: The bristles in your “natural” paint brushes and shaving brushes were probably stolen from slaughtered badgers. But after PETA alerted major retailers to PETA Asia’s latest exposé into the badger-hair industry, companies started taking action. Sears, Michaels, Kohl’s, Neiman Marcus, Target, Ulta Beauty, and Von Maur all stopped selling badger-hair brushes, removing them from their websites and thousands of combined stores nationwide. Universal Beauty Products, which owns shaving brand Van Der Hagen, also stopped selling them after receiving over 50,000 emails from PETA supporters.

The Cruelty They Try to Brush Under the Rug

As reported by the New York Post, PETA Asia obtained eyewitness footage inside eight badger-hair farms in China, the world’s leading exporter of badger hair. The video reveals badgers confined to tiny, filthy wire cages. One badger thrashed in terror as a worker forcefully dragged them out of a cage before beating them, stabbing them, and tearing off their skin.

The violence documented in this exposé mirrors what PETA Asia uncovered in the first-ever look into China’s badger-hair industry, where an eyewitness filmed a worker beating a badger with a chair leg.

But thankfully, over 100 brands are saying “no” to this bloody business.

You Can Help Badgers Right Now

Badgers are highly sensitive animals who, in nature, spend their time foraging, exploring, and constructing elaborate underground burrow systems. They are fastidious and have separate rooms for sleeping and giving birth, as well as designated outside “bathroom” areas. Badgers exploited for their hair spend their lives in filth, fear, and confinement.

The good news is that YOU can help change this. Always choose animal-free brushes, and support companies that have rejected this cruel trade. Every compassionate purchase helps send a clear message: No one should suffer for a beauty product, paintbrush, or shaving brush.
