Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Supervising Veterinarian Dr. Heather Rally in response to the Yukon Quest’s decision, finalized on Tuesday, to ban musher Hugh Neff from next year’s event:

The full necropsy report is in: Not only did Hugh Neff force a dog to pull a sled until his body broke down and he inhaled his own vomit, the report also shows that this dog died after enduring more than six hours of seizures. From the Yukon Quest to the Iditarod, dogs are being run to death, and this dog’s neglect must bring more consequences than a ban from one race. PETA is calling for Neff to face criminal charges for this dog’s prolonged, miserable death.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment,” and more information about our campaign against dogsled racing is available on PETA’s website.
