When Bill Gates comes knocking, you know your start-up company must be doing something right. Gates saw in Impossible Foods the potential to revolutionize the world for animals, the environment, and our health.
The company, dedicated to creating plant-based foods, has raised $182 million from Khosla Ventures, Horizon Ventures, Bill Gates, Google Ventures, UBS, Viking Global Investors, and a number of others.
Recently, Impossible Foods tested its first product, the Impossible Burger, a vegan burger so realistic that people are literally freaking out over it.
The burger recipe is unlike any other of its kind. Impossible Foods figured out how to isolate proteins and other nutrients from plants to recreate the taste and texture of a burger on a molecular level. It also contains more protein than a beef burger, and no hormones, antibiotics, or cholesterol.
The company’s greatest discovery was that a molecule called heme catalyzes the flavors in meat. The Impossible Burger uses a legume-derived heme-containing protein to the same effect.
Check out what celebrity chef David Chang of Momofuku had this to say about it:
This compassionate burger, which satisfies both meat-eaters and vegans, can help end the needless misery of slaughtering cows. The company is testing the Impossible Burger at select restaurants this summer, and it will be available in stores sometime in the (hopefully not too distant) future.

So would you eat a bloody, juicy burger made from plants? Either way, go vegan!
