Carvel’s new menu addition is a real winner! PETA is honoring the Atlanta-based ice cream chain with its national Vegan Nice Cream Award for launching a non-dairy menu across its more than 300 locations nationwide. The new offerings, created in partnership with KLIMON, include non-dairy soft serve, scooped frozen desserts, shakes, and signature Flying Saucers, with nine vegan flavors and more than 25 non-dairy toppings. PETA is sending Carvel a framed certificate and delicious vegan chocolates in thanks.

“Congratulations to Carvel for serving up a delicious, decadent dairy-free lineup that leaves mother cows and their calves in peace,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on other chains to meet the growing consumer demand for dairy-free treats.”
A recent survey shows that most people are unaware that cows only produce milk when they are pregnant and deliver a calf. In the dairy industry, however, calves are removed from their mothers within a day of birth so that the milk meant for the calf can be made into ice cream and other foods. Without their mother’s milk, male calves are relegated to veal crates or barren feedlots, and females are sentenced to the same sad fate as their mothers. Cow’s milk is also one of the primary causes of food allergies in children, and millions of Americans—including 95 percent of Asian Americans and 80 percent of Native and African Americans—are lactose intolerant.
Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their food-related carbon footprint, and slashes their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone thinking of making the switch.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
