More Monkeys Injured After Escape from Cages in Inotiv Facility: PETA Statement
For Immediate Release:
October 6, 2026
Please see the following statement from PETA Chief Science Advisor for Primate Experimentation, Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, regarding a citation issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against a laboratory in Evansville, Indiana, run by Inotiv, a company that continues to collect violations of the Animal Welfare Act for not meeting minimum standards of animal care. Three endangered, long-tailed macaques on two occasions escaped from their cages, leading to fights and injuries that required immediate medical attention in the latest citation:
Inotiv has repeatedly shown that it is unable or unwilling to keep monkeys contained, a bare minimum standard of animal care, and it should be shut down. When stressed monkeys escape from their cages, the consequences can be catastrophic: they fight, suffer serious injuries, and can die. Monkeys at Inotiv facilities have lost digits and limbs, and at the company’s Alice, Texas, facility, an escaped monkey was shredded after trying to climb through an industrial fan. Inotiv is a major importer of monkeys from Asia and Africa, and PETA urges everyone to ask their members of Congress to support the bipartisan PRIMATE Act to end the importation of monkeys for experimentation.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
