New Federal Warning Adds to Growing List of Inotiv Violations: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Chief Science Advisor for Primate Experimentation, Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, regarding a just-posted U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Official Warning levied against Inotiv’s LAMS West site in Alice, Texas, for critical violations documented in an inspection report after seven macaques were trapped and injured in hazardous enclosures. The next day, federal inspectors slapped Inotiv with two additional critical violations for separate incidents. Between March and June, the USDA has cited Inotiv eight times for violations involving primates or rabbits:

This Official Warning, a rare regulatory action reserved for the most egregious violations, amply demonstrates that Inotiv must be shut down. Animals are in danger in these ramshackle facilities and often end up with painful and grievous injuries, some even requiring amputation, and some monkeys die before they’re shipped off to laboratories for experiments that are not even remotely useful. Inotiv is already operating under a Department of Justice settlement stemming from previous animal welfare violations and clearly cannot or will not meet even the most basic animal care standards required by law. PETA calls on regulators to take meaningful action before more monkeys are hurt or die.
