Sec. 5-22. – Impoundment.

Authorized city employees shall impound any dog found running at large or found without a valid identification tag and are authorized to tranquilize the animal if deemed necessary. In the event that the animal requires tranquilization, the owner shall be required to pay for the tranquilization a fee not to exceed $5.00 per cubic centimeter for the tranquilizer. In the event that impoundment is warranted, the owner shall be required to pay an impoundment fee of $5.00 plus the costs of boarding the animal, not to exceed an additional $10.00 per day. If, within five days of impoundment, the owner of the dog does not pay all tranquilizer and impoundment fees, together with boarding costs, and, authorized city employees are authorized to allow the dog to be adopted to a person who qualifies to adopt the animal and pays the impoundment, tranquilizer, and boarding fees, and pays directly to the veterinarian in advance for rabies vaccination and spaying or neutering; alternatively, authorized personnel are authorized to humanely destroy such dog or otherwise dispose of it in a manner authorized by the mayor and board of aldermen.
