A Subway Save! PETA Praises NYPD for Rescuing a Dog Trapped Under a Manhattan Train

A dog named Moose was loose—and trapped under a subway train in Manhattan. It was a terrifying predicament that could have easily turned fatal; but thanks to the kind actions of the officers who came to the rescue, Moose is safe and back home where he belongs. That’s why PETA’s sending a Compassionate Police Department Award to the New York Police Department (NYPD) in recognition of the officers’ quick thinking and determination in rescuing someone in danger.

According to reports, Moose was struck by a subway train before scrambling under one of its cars—scared, but miraculously, not seriously injured. It was morning rush hour, and officers had to think quickly—and that they did. Calmly but urgently, one called out, “Come here. Come on. Come on, buddy,” gently coaxing Moose from the tracks. With careful coordination, they were able to pull him to safety—a heartwarming moment that drew cheers of joy from passersby. NYPD Transit officers then helped reunite Moose with his guardian.

Earlier this month, NYPD officers also came to the aid of another animal in distress—a tiny kitten trapped under a food truck near Central Park. After multiple 911 calls came in, officers from Midtown North raced to the scene and quickly freed the frightened but uninjured kitten. One officer ended up adopting the little cat himself, saying, “Everyone was pretty much telling me that the cat finds you—you don’t find the cat. It was a sign that we are meant to be connected together.”

In addition to sending a framed certificate to the New York Police Department, PETA is mailing delicious vegan chocolates to the Special Operations Bureau and the Transit Bureau for playing vital roles in Moose’s rescue. We also sent a gift basket and a thank-you note to the officer who adopted the rescued kitten.

These compassionate officers saved a life and set a powerful example of stepping in and taking action when an animal is in need.
