Oakland and Berkeley Eateries Nab PETA’s National ‘Vegan Roast Boast’ Award

With more people than ever expected to celebrate a meat-free Thanksgiving this year, two eateries in the Bay Area have won a national Vegan Roast Boast Award from PETA. The Butcher’s Son and Planted Table made the top 10 list for their Crispy Skin Turkey and House Made Whole Apple Cider Basted Vegan Turkey Roast, respectively—both succulent solutions to 2022’s soaring turkey prices and rampant bird flu outbreaks.

Hailed as California’s original vegan butcher shop and owned by brother-sister duo Peter Fikaris and Christina Stobing, The Butcher’s Son offers a holiday Vegan Feast complete with its award-winning 1-pound crispy vegan turkey roast, meat-free sausage stuffing, Shepherd’s pie, and dairy-free cheesecake and eggnog.

Planted Table is also a family affair, run by sisters Megan Scott and Lauren Mahlke, who started the all-vegan meal delivery service as a way of encouraging people to “make choices that cause the least amount of harm … especially when it comes to what’s on our plates!” Planted Table’s award-winning roast is accompanied by roasted apples, carrots, and celery.

“These juicy roasts from The Butcher’s Son and Planted Table are putting the Bay Area on the taste map by offering all the holiday flavors we love, without cruelty or cholesterol,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “This ‘ThanksVegan,’ PETA is celebrating local businesses that make it easy as vegan pumpkin pie to enjoy a bird-friendly feast.”

Not only are vegan roasts free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol, they also spare animals immense suffering: More than 45 million turkeys will be killed for this Thanksgiving alone. During their short lives, they’re forced to stand in their own waste and inhale ammonia-laden air inside dark warehouses. The birds are even genetically manipulated to make them grow unnaturally large, which causes their legs to break beneath them.

The other eight honorees include Green New American Vegetarian in Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona; The Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis; Monk’s Meats in Brooklyn, New York; and Three Girls Vegan Creamery in Guilford, Connecticut. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers a “ThanksVegan” guide.
