— Fur and leather are definitely out this fall. So is makeup that was tested on animals. Just ask the more than 190,000 (and growing) Street Team members of peta2—the world’s largest youth animal rights organization—who, along with visitors to peta2.com, recently had the opportunity to vote for their favorite animal-friendly people and companies in peta2’s first-ever "Libby" Awards ("Libby" is for "liberation"). Los Angeles-based fashion retailer American Apparel and Culver City-based Smashbox Cosmetics came up big as winners:
· Best Vegan-Friendly Clothing Company: American Apparel
Featuring the very latest in fashions at great prices, it’s no wonder that American Apparel has grown more than fivefold over the past three years. The company operates 155 stores in 11 countries, and you won’t find a stitch of leather or fur—or sweatshop items, for that matter—in any of them, thanks to founder Dov Charney’s commitment to social responsibility. Atticus, Matt & Nat, Neighborhoodies, and Rockett were runners-up.
· Best Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Company: Smashbox
Smashbox proudly displays PETA’s cruelty-free rabbit logo—which means that the company never tests on animals—on its Web site and in its store displays. Its full line of glamorous makeup and skin-care products are favorites with everyone from the girl next-door to Hollywood’s elite. Smashbox eagerly donated many of its finest products as prizes in a recent peta2.com giveaway contest. Runners-up included Urban Decay, LUSH, Revlon, and M.A.C.
"American Apparel and Smashbox are meeting peta2 members’ demand for fashions and cosmetics that are trendy, top-quality, and animal-friendly," says peta2 Youth Marketing Manager Angela Modzelewski. "Customers can rest assured that when they spend their money with these two companies, compassion comes free with every purchase."
American Apparel and Smashbox will each receive a plaque and be featured on peta2.com. Other categories included favorite athlete, food, fur foe, film, music, and peta2 Street Team activist.
