PETA Science Consortium International Applauds U.S. EPA on Newly Released Documents Advancing the Use of Reliable Non-animal Approaches

Please see the following statement from Dr. Amy Clippinger, president of PETA Science Consortium International e.V. Today, the Science Consortium applauds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) latest step towards scientifically robust and human-relevant chemical assessments. In newly released documents, the EPA Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics notes that data from reliable, human cell–based respiratory tissue models will be prioritized over data from animal tests when evaluating the respiratory irritation of surfactants and describes how these models can be used to support regulatory decision-making. The agency cites multiple peer-reviewed publications co-authored by EPA scientists, PETA Science Consortium International, and other collaborators that laid the scientific foundation for this approach and highlights an ongoing collaboration to expand the available human-relevant data for surfactants.

The EPA’s latest action reflects its continued leadership in clarifying data needs and advancing modern approaches for chemical assessment. By prioritizing human cell–based respiratory tissue models for surfactant evaluations, the EPA is translating years of scientific progress into practical regulatory action. Companies should see this as a green light to use reliable and human-relevant non-animal methods. We are pleased to support the EPA’s efforts and look forward to continuing our collaboration to advance the best available science.

The EPA Office of Pesticide Programs also announced today the release of a document on using a calculation approach to assess acute oral toxicity of pesticides instead of using rats.
