Victory: Utah Ends Mandatory Cat and Dog Pound Seizures

Written by PETA | March 26, 2010

Update: On Saturday, March 27, Utah’s governor signed the bill into law, formally amending the state’s pound-seizure law. This means that animal shelters are no longer required to turn over animals for use in cruel experiments. Hooray!

Thanks in large part to e-mails, letters, and phone calls from thousands of compassionate supporters, Utah legislators voted by an overwhelming majority to amend a state law so that government-run animal shelters will not be forced to sell dogs and cats to laboratories for use in cruel and deadly experiments upon request. Once the governor signs the bill, Utah will no longer have the dubious distinction of being one of only three states in the country that still mandate that animal shelters engage in this shameful practice. The new law also lengthens the required holding period for animals in shelters and mandates that shelters make greater efforts to find the guardians of lost animals.

These positive changes come on the heels of a recent PETA undercover investigation inside laboratories at the University of Utah. The shocking investigation revealed that each year, more than 100 homeless cats and dogs from government-run animal shelters in Utah are sold to the university for use in invasive, painful, and deadly experiments. In one instance, the university bought a pregnant cat from a local animal shelter and injected chemicals into her kitten’s brains, causing fluid to build up inside their heads. All the kittens died.

With this new law, companion animals in Utah—and the people who care for them—can rest a little easier.

Please take a moment to contact the University of Utah and urge it to stop buying animals from animal shelters once and for all.

This is nothing other than ritual for personal pleasure out of watching another’s suffering. How can you not stop and think “How would I feel if someone did this to me?” It’s as simple as that…. Please Utah University and all other similar institutions and individuals just stop Please!! It is pain! It it suffering! It’s sadistic and cruel and so so unnecessary. America is supposed to be the land of opportunity and so far advanced I live in Africa Live up to this name and give your animals “THE SAME OPPORTUNITY IN THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE” that you all boast about and go on and SET A DECENT TREND

Put yourself please only very briefly in the shoes of a tormented you creature the fear of death with which you are all alone is no one can tell about the pain the numbness to defend themselves against not being able to you’d be mad right? Please be completely honest with yourself How can people dare to decide over life and death of his fellow creatures with whom he shares this our planet Earth? Please listen at length to this atrocity and look for alternatives they are there believe me! Give the animals you assume a human life safety and no longer in solitary confinement until the end of their normal life Please! You have suffered enough! There will come a day when people judge for killing an animal exactly as they judge a man today. Leonardo da Vinci

University of Utah This is insane! please stop buying animals for these disgraceful experiments! As ANY major medical university need to stop this shameful practice I thought this kind of horror was banned years ago I can tell you that! whatever “results” you produce are useless. Any researcher worth their education knows that just because a “finding” can be published does not mean it can be reproduced in humans which are the end point for most of these tests. Many universities nationally have found alternative methods to perform these same experiements or tests in nonanimal models often with better i.e. reproducable more realistic results. Perhaps you should spend funds looking into these models rather than harming another animal. I couldn’t have put it in any better words expressed! I FEEL THIS IS BEYOUND ANY MEASURE THE WORST THING AND MOST EVIL CRUEL DISCUSTING WAY TO TREAT THESE HELPLESS ANIMALS! I HATE anyone who participates in this sleezy slimmy CRUEL animal abuse. I rather die than see an animal suffering for the sake of human survival! What and why do we as humans believe we rule and animals are souless? That their lives are not just important as ours? I have a beautiful cat named Tupac he’s ADORED by me and my family! I would honestly risk my own life to save his life. Sincerly Brinda Davis

  • Enid says:

Thank goodness there are people in the world who feel as I do about animals. Instead of using poor animals in these terrible experiments use the people who do these things to them it would give more accurate results!!!

  • hester dove says:

What on earth are they trying to teach? There is nothing to be gained from these awful experiments and they need to be stopped. Anyone who participates in them has something dark going on in their minds. What a waste of school money. Teach the students something positive.

  • Richard Zatarain Jr says:

i would reather see experiments on some slimysleezy people the these poor defenceless little animalshelp nor speak for themselfs that shows how low and cowardly that humans really are.

  • LISETT says:

Please use other methods to experiment but let those poor animals free now!

  • J. Larkins says:

How many of you whom experiment on these shelter companion animals go home to pet care for and love your own? Hypocritical don’t you think? You’re despicable. Stop this barbaric cruelty now.

  • Lillian Ingria says:

This University is located in the Land of Latter Day Saints! How can you live with yourselves! Putting any animal to feel and experience such agony when they could be having a second chance in life going into a loving home. I have a shelter Papillon just one year and three months old I shutter to think what her fate might have been if she lived in your area!

  • Marinà says:

Please stop buying animals from shelters to use for such a horrible indecent manner. Animals have feelings and they shouldn’t be treated in such a wrong inhumane way. No human would want to be bought to be experimented on and just because animals can not speak doesnt mean it makes them more vulnerable for torture. Please have compassion and a heart and stop animal cruelty.

I rather die than see an animal suffering for the sake of human survival. For those who use animals for testing in the name of medicine and so call science they are no far worst than those Chinese who claims animals parts such as tiger eyes shark fins cats and dogs meat snake blood bear claw elephant tusk monkey brain women afterbirth human fetus yes! You read it right some of them sicko Chinese litteraly consumed human fetus etc. etc. etc. are They claims these having some kind of so call “medicinal” value. YEAH PETA AND ALL PEOPLE INVOLVED FROM DONATING TO WRITING LETTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONWARD AND UPWARD!!!!!! NEXT?!

  • KATHRYN says:

Why is it the dominion over animals has been translated to mean tyranny? Humans have dominion over their children and they don’t eat and wear and experiment on them. Why is it OK to exploit animals? Because they can’t speak for themselves? The best thing that could happen on the planet would be that the dangerous human species would become endangered.

  • lori corbett says:

this day and age we are still hurting animals for reserch and food. i can not even think of hurting animals for any of it. laws need to be harder on the people that do this horable things. we send our kids to school and this is what they teach them tax dallorstutionshowing our children it is ok to do this to animals. it makes me sick. we need to come down so much harder on this sick people that thinks it is ok. sick sick sick

I’m glad it took place. I use to work at U.U. and I didn’t like what I was told and what I saw with the nice or rat’s. I’m against on animal cruelty. I hope and wish that people in this state will follow the law. why not use it on us humans for testing. animals are loyal no matter what they don’t ask for anything more than love food and shelter.

University of Utah This is insane! please stop buying animals for disrespectfulness. It’s not right at all. What would you do if you were the animal and someone wanted to do harmful tests on you? You wouldn’t like it very much. Only do to others what you would want them to do to you. I mean really? The animals have feelings too. Think about them for a change instead of yourself?

  • coral roberts 30 3 2010 says:

  • Jackie says:

I don’t understand this. I mean the thing with the kittens are they trying to raise the next crop of future sociopaths? Perhaps you should have a promotion saying people who teach animal testing are raising the next generation of murderers. Anyone who could make a living thing suffer like that is not human.

  • Becky Stokke says:

The university of Utah should be ashamed. No good can come of these experiments it’s just cruelty. And it teaches people that animals have no worth or feelings. All life has worth even or perhaps especially those who cannot talk.
