Unbearable Cruelty Coming to an End?

Written by PETA | July 22, 2010

The list of celebrities who have been spotted wearing Stella McCartney’s luxe animal-friendly fashions reads like a Hollywood who’s who: Jada Pinkett Smith. Kate Winslet. Charlize Theron. Could the Queen’s Guards be next?

We hope so. After a faux-fur prototype of a Queen’s Guard’s bearskin cap was presented during a meeting earlier this week with several Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials, we’re encouraged by the possibilities. Stella, who collaborated with Canadian eco-designer Atom Cianfarani on the prototype, has been working with PETA UK for several years to develop a faux-fur hat that will pass the MoD’s rigorous water-resistance tests.

“Historically, England has a very high regard for animals, so it makes perfect sense that the MoD should continue shedding ceremonial furs from uniforms,” she says.

The new material is lighter and more breathable than bear fur, is less expensive, and of course, no bears were killed to make it. Currently, one bear is killed for every hat that’s produced.

The MoD officials were impressed by PETA UK’s prototype and have greenlighted further testing. Check back here for updates.

It just made me sick reading that one bear is killed for every hat produced. Lets kill the monarchy and donate their hair to sad bald people just kidding.

If the new material is cheaper and no living being suffers including the people who wear the products because they are lighter in weight doesn’t it make sense to use the new material then?! I mean common sense! As for Stella Kate Charlize you make us South Africans proud! I am so proud of all you and for what you are doing!

Let us hope that the Ministry of Defence takes notice this time and switches to fake fur caps.I agree with Chris about spending the money on the soldiers in Afghanistan instead. Well done to Stella McCartneyPETA and everyone else involved in trying to end the killing of innocent bears for decorative purposes. PS The queen must have a say in this matter but she doesn’t seem to be doing anything to put a stop to it!

“The new material is lighter and more breathable than bear fur is less expensive and of course no bears were killed to make it. Currently one bear is killed for every hat that’s produced.” Ethical Issues aside the fact that it’s cheaper is surely a very strong argument in current times. Wonder how much equipment could be bought for soldiers in Afganistan with the savings made?
