Ringling Kills Runaway Zebra

Written by PETA | March 12, 2010

Yesterday, Ringling announced that it had euthanized Lima, the 12-year-old zebra who ran amok for 40 minutes in Atlanta after he escaped from the circus last month. According to a statement released by the circus, numerous medical treatments failed to repair the damage to the zebra’s hooves.

Shortly after Lima escaped, PETA called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure that Lima be provided adequate veterinary care for his injuries and to remove all zebras from Ringling’s traveling shows. Now we’re hoping that the tragedy of Lima’s death moves officials to end the exploitation of all zebras in circuses.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that time after time animals in circuses try to make a break for freedom. While we mourn Lima’s traumatic and painful ordeal, we are thankful that he will no longer be forced to endure a life of constant confinement, in fear of being beaten to perform unnatural tricks. Help stop the suffering of animals abused by Ringling by urging everyone you know to forgo circuses that use animals.

We need to do something about this abuse. Not only in circuses but everywhere animal abuse takes place. What have animals done to deserve this treatment? People who allow this and people who do this need to be treated the same way to see how it feels.

Funny thing is when I was a little girlI think I was like 5 or 6 my dad took me to ringlings and it was 1 of the saddest experiences in my life.I couldn’t understand WHY the animals weren’t free in the wild. They looked sooooo sad and it was sooo wrong to me thenthat its the EXACT reason I never took mine. And I would tell anyone who wud ask why to really look into these animals soulsthey’re there. If a 5 yo can see their sadness and feel their pain u kno its gotta be wrong.BOYCOTT their a!!!!!

  • Jessica says:

taking WILD animals from thier natural home and trying to force them to do something they were not naturally born to do is equal to kidnapping a human. these trainers should be punished in the same way. i cant believe anyone could do something so horrific to these amazing animals. if someone was doing this to another human more people would care. animals are important if not more important as humans and they deserve to be treated that way.

  • C lazarus says:

The poor Zebra Lima tried to save his life from his cruel handlers Any person who did not help this animal deserves to be treated in the same horrific way animal suffer’s daily in the hands of Ringlings handlers. Shame on the Circus!!

what b said. this is just plain sick.

  • Marnie says:

How sad !!! Poor animal why did nobody try to call it with some food or did they…

  • b says:

Man huge shock! NOT!!! How often do we see these animals going “wild”? Too many times. And it’s no wonder. Seeing as how THEY ARE WILD animals. But yet stupid people keep thinking they can domesticate them or train them to “behave” out of their natural instinct. I’m not saying I want animals to attack people and certianly the people who die or get injured fromt this they have families too. But this is the life of the animals and who are we to change it. A zebra isn’t a house dog.

This is just sick. Sick sick sick!!

  • Laura Whitworth says:

I saw that zebra from a distance while protesting that despicable circus in Orlando this last march… I also saw them parading little Barack in as well… I wanted to cry then and I want to cry now… that zebra was literally running for his life… trying to leave his life of Ringling horror.

I watch shows like “Animals gone wild” Just last evening I was watching the running of the bulls and to my sheer joy and amazement one of the abusers got a “HORNED IN THE BUT” but what was even funnier to me is where in the but his anus I say I laughed only because for all the pain and torment wild animals even domestic go through I thought it was about time someone felt like the animal they were abusing. If I offended anyone I am sorry but I am offended at what is happening world wide to animals needlessly FurAmusement researchmeatso on and so forth. In fact China’s Liaoning province right now is being investigated for starving 11 tigers endangered siberian tigers and harvesting their organs go figure the 1 abusers of animals. So it is no wonder animals try to run away to freedom

Margozebras are distant cousins of horses. When a horse is forced to run on hard unforgiving surfaces such as the highway where this animal was chased and eventually captured they frequently suffer serious concusion injuries to their hooves. They develop a very painful disease called “laminitis”. Essentially what happens is that the bloodflow to the hooves is shortcircuited and the tissue dies causing the coffin bone to separate from the hoof wall. Eventually the bond will drop straight down through the sole of the hoof. Can you even imagine the pain the animal experiences. There is no easy and “painless” way to treat laminitis. It frequently is fatal. Please don’t patronize ANY circus that exploits animals. Only when people stop giving them money will they get the message.

  • Susan T says:

In response to a newspaper article I left a comment about the injuries the zebra probably suffered. Being a longtime horsewoman I feared that the zebra would suffer severe “laminitis” a disease of the hoof that involves constricted blood flow and eventually separation of the coffin bone. It is extremely painful and often necessitates that the animal be humanely euthanized. What a surprise Ringling? The article quoted one of your sources saying that Lima would probably go on to perform later that day. What fools! What uncaring mindless fools! When will people reject animal circuses and seek other types of entertainment that do not involve FORCING animals to perform? When? Will a child have to be trampled to death by a rampaging frustrated elephant or mauled by an escaped big catsurely resulting in the death of the animal as well? It simply amazes me that we live in such a technologicallyadvanced society but when it comes to humans using their brains in conjunction with their hearts the connection is completely broken. At least Lima the zebra is FREE now. Rest in peace Lima.

  • Rissa says:

Zebras are my favorite animals! I hate that the poor darling was destroyed. The zebra was probably trying to escape from such cruel handlers.

  • Milena says:

This story and the millions of others of animal abuse make me sick!

  • Andre Inglis says:

For those that are ‘sad’ turn that into positive energy and TAKE ACTION httpwww.ringlingbeatsanimals.comshare.asp The animals don’t want our sympathy they want our help!

  • kelsey says:

OMG! That is soooo sad!!!!!!!!! those people are soooooo mean they should be shut down that’s awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Johanna says:

Well said NT. Lima is free now. AAGI’m transitioning to Veganism. I’ve lost weight without even trying! Veganism is better for everyone!!!

  • AAG says:

RIP Lima. You are in God’s loving embrace now! You are free to run….. No creature should have to suffer at the hands of human animals such as Lima did. Such an unnatural atmosphere so much pain and abuse endured daily made Lima try to escape his cruel and violent captors. Africa is his natuarl environment where he could have raised a family away from the real demons humans. It is time that this archaic violent hideous Ringling Bros. circus be closed down permanently! Go vegan it is a moral imperative!

  • lisa gardener says:

wow they have some serious problems putting down a poor zebra! i bet that they didn’t even give the animal ANY veterinary care . i bet the care it got was a whipping and then put down . these people are worse monsters than the ones in the Percy Jackson books . I am ashamed for these people that work for these monsters

  • PETA FAN says:

IT IS SICKENING THAT RINGLING AND OTHER CIRCUSES HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY THEIR FREEDOM WHILE THE POOR ANIMALS ARE CHAINED AND TORTURED TO KEEP THEM FAR……… FROM THEIR RIGHTFUL FREEDOM SO PEOPLE CAN HAVE SOME FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT BECAUSE THEY “LOVE” ANIMALS. IT IS SOSAD THAT PEOPLE THINK CIRCUSES WOULDNT BE THE SAME WITHOUT ANIMALS NOSTALGIA AND FANTASY RUN WILD DESPITE ALL OF THE AVAILABLE FACTS. THE FACT THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WILLFULLY TURN A BLIND EYE TO ANIMALS IN ENTERTAINMENT AND FOR FOOD ETC. IS JUST SO DISAPPOINTING SO THANK YOU PETA FOR DOING SO MUCH TO GIVE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE OPEN TO LEARNING AND CARING AND CHANGING THEIR HABITS THE INFORMATION TO DO SO! PETA THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • weepeing bystander says:

Oh my god that is so sad!

  • Kimberly says:

Now I know why my mom never took me to a circus when I was little. Those people are monsters putting down a zebra for no reason. At least Lima is in a better place away from those aholes.

  • lisa says:

Yet another animal suffer’s in the hands of Ringling’s along with the hundred’s of others.

  • margo says:

A zebra shouldn’t be in Atlanta anyway. It should be in Africa.

  • margo says:

Why did they decide to euthanize him after he escaped? I don’t understand.

  • carol tuskan says:

I will be writing to Ringling about this. My letters won’t change anything right now but I believe in putting pressure on people and letting them know that the public knows what’s really going on.

  • NT says:

Lima is in a better place now peaceful and FREE.

  • Amy says:

it breaks my heart to know that people go to these circuses even knowing that these beautiful creatures are being abused and euthinized. What more do we need to do to get it into the peoples heads who support or go to these events?

  • Tammy says:

    So sad!

  • Louise says:

Is that awful! Better had been a park to run away…
