Oh, How We Love Steve-O

Written by PETA | March 11, 2011

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … Steve-O! The vegan comedian and daredevil led a PETA protest outside the Edmonton Valley Zoo to call on zoo officials to allow Lucy, the ailing and lonely elephant at the zoo, to retire to an elephant sanctuary. “I’m sympathetic to Lucy because I know that elephants in their natural habitat will walk some 30 miles every day,” Steve-O says. “I don’t understand how the zoo’s able to keep her. It seems so black and white.”

As Steve-O notes, elephants need to walk around and move freely. Edmonton’s frigid winters mean that Lucy spends months on end inside a barn. Is it any wonder she’s suffering from arthritis, chronic foot problems, and an undiagnosed respiratory ailment?  Lucy—who has been in the zoo for more than 30 years—is depressed and needs the company of other elephants and room to move around.

You can help by joining Steve-O, Bob BarkerWilliam Shatner,  and NHL veteran Georges Laraque in appealing to zoo officials  to allow Lucy to retire to a sanctuary.

Wow! I never even knew this went on in march! If i had known I would have immediately came. I live 20 minutes from edmonton, and the animals in the valley zoo look so horrible and depressed. I went there last year for my birthday and never plan on going again because it has scarred me for life. All of the animals looked so lifeless and bored, one of the huge snakes was just sitting there with his mouth all dry and cracked and just hanging there opened. A walabee was just sitting on the floor slouching staring at a corner. I ended up crying, on my birthday, from being there…and im 18. It was horrendous, I truthfully believe something needs to be done about our zoo!

I beleive that what Steve-O is doing is fantastic! Kepp up the good work, everyone. One day, we will stop animal cruelty in zoos and circuses…so let’s keep moving forward!

  • Deb GT says:

Please let Lucy go to a better home, where she can be with some friends and live with some semblance of a normal life. You know if you care for animals, you have to do what’s right, so how can it be right to deprive this animal of what she needs?

  • Cyndi says:

Again and again my heart aches for the way animals are kept in captivity and out of their natural habitat. God did not create them to be abused by man in any way shape or form. This is not the way to enjoy them. It is sad to see them sad. I wish they all could be free. Lucy more than deserves to retire in a caring sanctuary where she can do the things that elephants do and not what man makes her do. Please free her and let her live with other elephants and be happy.

  • Karen Lamb says:

Please exercise and apply compassion in and for the life and well-being of Lucy. She is a living being and Elephants have great emotional abilities and needs which equalize a balance in their lives. Lucy needs an environment in the company with others of her own species-kind. Please help her experience and know this in her remaining years. Please.

  • Alexandra Hoehn says:

Please free Lucy and let her retire to an elephant sanctuary! Stop her pain and give her the chance to spend the rest of her life in company! FREEDOM FOR LUCY!!!!!!

  • Deepa Mathur says:

You are absolutely right in your view that Lucy needs her natural habitat but after 30 yrs in confinement and in such a sick state will she be able to survive without medical care in the wild on her own? Please confirm this first.

  • melmac says:

Why do you want to be cruel to Lucy? Don’t you know that moving an elephant can kill it? This goes especially true when acclimated to colder weather. I can’t believe PETA here – they’d rather an elephant die in transit than let it live out the rest of its life in a place it’s used to. Even the veterinarians said that where she lives is OK. (Or, are you going to say you’re smarter than vets?)

  • Linda says:

    Let Lucy go!!!!!!

  • Janice Sacchetti says:

SO SAD please we cant let this continue!!

  • Aneliese says:

    Aw! Go PETA & Steve-O!

  • antigeekess says:

Please let this senior elephant go to a place where she can finally find happiness and better health.

  • Donovan says:

Please allow Lucy to go to the elephant sanctuary. After 30 years of being held captive in a zoo it is obvious that she is not doing well. It is tragic that she is being forced to suffer and it would be very humane to allow her to live out her remaining years in happiness.

  • Susan says:

Elephants are so intelligent. My heart bleeds for Lucy and for all of these magnificent creatures kept in conditions so contrary to their natural needs. Elephants are very social animals. Let Lucy spend her last years with other elephants where she has some freedom to roam.

  • Donna B says:

You’ve had enough of Lucy’s life. Let her enjoy a little of HER life for a change. This is just plain cruel. You are not only making Lucy’s life a living hell but the rest of us hurt for her as well. Do the right thing.

  • TYLER WATTS says:

SUCH A SAD SITUATION HOW INHUMAN PEOPLE R WHEN IT COMES TO COMPASSION OVER GREED!!!!!PEOPLE NEED TO JUST STOP VISITING THIS ZOO IF THE DO NOT ALLOW THIS ELEPHANT TO LIVE THE REST OF IT’S LIFE IN A PROPER RETIREMENT ..IT’S LIVED AND WORKED IT’S WHOLE LIFE AND DESERVES WHAT IT NEEDS JUST LIKE ANY SENIOR CITIZEN WHO HAS PAID THERE DUES TO SOCIETY AND WORKED AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR LUCY TO BE FREE AND ENJOY THE REST OF WHAT LIFE SHE HAS LEFT……..DO THE RIGHT THING ZOO!!!!!!!!

  • julie brueggeman says:

    Free her!!!

  • Kathleen Senior says:

Pleas let Lucy retire- she has given so much of herself and now it’s your turn to give back to her, and let her live the rest of her days in comfort and happiness!

  • Heather Carrington says:

Edmonton Valley Zoo… you’ve had 30 years out of her! So let her enjoy what time she has left with her own kind…in an elephant sanctuary. Let this ‘lady’ grow old gracefully. Elephants are intelligent and feeling animals. They need the companionship of others. Please don’t be so cruel as to not let her go.

  • willis denuto says:

let her live the rest of her life as free as she can

  • Andrea D says:

Its time to thank Lucy for her 30 years of service at the zoo. Please let her retire with dignity. She deserves to have some what of a normal elephant life before she dies. Please be kind to her and avoid giving zoos a cruel reputation.

  • Drew Rodriguez says:

Please allow Lucy to retire with her own kind. Kind regards Drew

    Sent and shared!!

  • Sheryl Smith says:

I can not imagine an animal every saying to their animal friends “hey let’s go live there, we will be happy and carefree and well taken care of. Even tho its not our natural habitat and we can not move around as we would like Cheers let’s do it” Let Lucy live out the rest of her days where she belongs!

  • Fran says:

Please let Lucy go to an elephant sancturary where she can have friends and live out her life in peace and happiness.

  • coolkid says:

Steve-O and PETA= best combo ever

  • pamela says:

Let Lucy out of your zoo… maybe we should crate you for the rest of your life and charge money to come see you..

  • Jane says:

Please let this old girl have some companions, before she dies of a broken heart!!!

  • laura says:

let lucy retire in an elephant sanctuary!! come on lets show your heart!! think about lucy, she needs to leave the zoo now. 30 years are a long time. at least let her live her ultimate years in peace, how she likes, with a elephant family and room to move arond!!

  • kimberly says:

How can the zoo so heartless? I am just shocked!! But i know if enough people protest they will give her up, after all they will start loosing buisness soon if they dont. And thats all that matters to them…MONEY!!

  • Rachael Maxwell says:

Please free Lucy to a well deserved retirement among her own kind, to not do so is wanton cruelty.
