Monkey Breaks Out of Laboratory

Written by PETA | June 30, 2011

Update: Eighteen people with homes near the Yerkes National Primate Research Center have filed a complaint with city and county officials demanding that the facility be shut down. The female rhesus monkey still has not been found.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the 4,000 intelligent, sensitive nonhuman primates at Emory University’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center would want to flee their misery and deadly fate. But a brave monkey who escaped her captors at Yerkes this week is now loose in a foreign and frightening environment, and she faces injury, starvation, and possibly worse, thanks to the facility’s failure to maintain safe and secure enclosures. PETA is calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to investigate the laboratory for possible violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

Yerkes, which is also one of the last facilities in the world to conduct invasive experiments on chimpanzees, has a sordid history of violations of federal animal welfare laws, including 10 violations in just the last two years and a $15,000 fine in 2007. It has been cited for scalding a monkey to death by allowing her to go through a boiling hot automated cage washer, restraining conscious primates with duct tape, and negligently causing the deaths of chimpanzees. We are urging USDA inspectors to file civil charges and levy substantial fines to let Yerkes know that it means business and that experimenters cannot violate the law with impunity.

You can help our fellow primates imprisoned at Yerkes by asking Congress to end to all invasive experiments on great apes.

I honestly can’t believe people still do animal research- especially on our closest relatives. When you hear about experiments conducted on people everyone’s horrified; it gets national attention and people demand to stop it, but it’s ok if it is on animals? Living, breathing, intelligent, feeling creatures? All animals can feel pain and emotion just like people. ‘Animal research’ doesn’t even benefit animals, it’s all about people and their greed & carelessness. And what good does it do people knowing that: ‘ok, my medicine worked great on a mouse’ but that doesn’t mean it’ll work for a human- this inhumane testing is needless. Animals should be treated as equals all the time.

    Vile monsters. STOP THIS NOW>

  • Denise M says:

I hope she is found. Either way being where she is now has to be better then the laboratory. I couldn’t imagine having experiments conducted on myself, or being scaulded to death or even have to be in that type of pain. This is heartbreaking and sickening :'(

  • Toby says:

Clearly, if the ape is found, he/she should not be turned over to authorities. The monkey is an escaped, abused slave who deserves better; finding a sanctuary might be difficult, but it would be the best option.

You can feel free to put my first comment or not but here is some additional information: please go to the site ‘look to the stars’ where you shall find the proof that Jane Goodall is a member of ‘Heifer’ and then go to ‘Heifer’ where you shall find the book ‘Goats for milk and meat’ by Rosalie Sinn! Goodall is promoting goat eating in Africa and I suggest also worldwide during her speech-touring around the world! Take care from that woman but I would like you to be honest and to put this here online in order that people can see it! Or what else should I think then about Peta?????

  • Serenity Embodied says:

This is not something that can be allowed to continue it is well known that we the public will not stand for this kind of negligence especially at the cost of lives STRIKE THEM DOWN they have had countless opportunities to correct thier activities now we must correct them with punitive measures!

  • Rat King says:

Why stop experiments just on great apes and not on all animals! This is the speciesistic idea of Jane Goodall! For this reason I am no more a member of any animal rights organization for the moment! I try to adopt some animals and help them! For example IDAUSA is not putting my text concerning this problem on their blog! This is dishonest and like this animal protection is suffering continuous stagnation! I wonder if you shall put this one here!

terribly poor creatures. Life is temporary for all. “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.” -Gautama Buddha 563 BC – 483 BC

This is a horrible practice!! People need to stop immediatly!

In 1899, Mark Twain wrote, “I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it. The pains which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity towards it . . .” Animal research isn’t just cruel, it’s also bad science. Dr. Pietro Croce states, “an experimental model of the human species does not exist.” Meaning simply that one cannot expect results derived from testing on animals biologically different from humans to be truly representative of something beneficial to humans.

A nation is judged by the way it treats it’s animals -paraphrased quote from Mohandas K. Gandhi. I agree with this. Don’t call yourself civilized if you allow this. It needs to end right now.

animal testers are monsters. Scalding monkeys alive like Mcdonalds! I don’t just want them to fine the company 15.000 dollars. I want them to shut the company down and throw them in jail and seize all there money they got off of cruelty.
