Men Face Charges for Dog’s Murder

Written by PETA | April 8, 2009

When Glenn Beck broke the story of retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, whose dog, DASY, was allegedly shot and killed by two men Beck appropriately refers to as “Dirtbag 1” and “Dirtbag 2,” PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department leapt into action. PETA immediately offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and, if it proves warranted, the conviction of Michael Edmonds, a fugitive, and one of the men accused of the heinous act.

Shortly after we sent our letter to the Texas Rangers’ office, Edmonds reportedly turned himself in. And we’re happy to announce that he, along with Alfonso Hernandez, is now facing cruelty charges for DASY’s death. We understand that both of these monsters are also under investigation for other animal killings in Walker County, Texas.

Watch the moving clip from Glenn Beck’s second broadcast on this tragic issue and remember to report cruelty to animals to your local law-enforcement agency—and let us know if the agency doesn’t take action or you need help.

These 4 are useless. Marcus is a herosomeone the kids of America can look at and grow up to be. He didnt pull the trigger he didnt tie em up and torture them in his basement as he said he could he simply brought them to justice. If it was me I would castrate them alive and force them to eat it raw for killing my dog but Marcus is a better person than I am. Marcus my thoughts are with you.

Does Texas have a low classifying service dogs higher that only pets not to poohpooh the emotional loss of a pet but service dogs perform that function as well as making life more possible for people with difficultiesdisabilities. Certain professions are treated with greater considerations what about service dogs. This case seems like a great one to do a test case on.

like others have said. Marcus Luttrell has lost so much in his life. but his dog DASY was his rehab puppy given to him when he got back from Afghanistan to help marcus through his physical and emotional issues. marcus had a special bond with DASY because she represented his long recovery and she represented his fallen teammates and friends.he said she was like a daughter to him and to lose that is unbearable. he grabbed his gun and chased those punks across three counties going 100 mph. he wasnt going to stop until he got them. and when he did he showed them mercy like a real man. even though if they had shot my sweet labrador i would not have been as merciful. HOOYAH!Petty Officer Luttrell

I also am heartbroken by the human aspect of this tragedy. How unfair that someone like Marcus Luttrell who put his life on the line for us and for the dirt bags who killed his dog has to go through this. I hope they found guilty and receive a heavy sentence. As for Heather I think it is unfortunate that you politicize this by targeting conservatives. I and my family are conservatives and between my mom sister and me we have three dogs and sixteen rescued cats. We love them dearly as we do all animals.

  • Lynn says:

I’m so disgusted that the other two guys sitting in the back seat have gotten off scotfree. We’ve got to do something to strengthen the cruelty laws!!

  • Jane Rubino says:

My heart goes out to Dasy and Marcus Luttrell. I saw the story unfold on Glenn Beck all week. Later the Governor of Texas was on he program and he has promised that justice will be served in the case. Also on Newsvine a writer has said he will contact Marcus to give him a new retriever puppy. Let’s wish Marcus all the best during this difficult time.

Thank you PETA for everything you do. Someone needs to protect these creatures. Thank you for getting involved with this case. I hope the little scumbags get what they deserve for all the animals they have harmed.

  • Lea Hankamer says:

Thanks to Glenn Beck for making public this incident. To think that a young man who put his life on the line for all of us had to have this happen just breaks my heart. Thank you PETA for putting up a reward to catch these men. This dog apparently meant the world to a young man who is on the road to recovery and it appears that the dog played a part in helping him do just that. I cannot understand how people can be so cruel to animals.

  • Evelyn says:

Thank you so much for posting this. My heart goes out to Marcus Luttrell and the other families who lost their beloved pets. To the people who committed these crimes I am sick and saddened by their disrepect and uncaring behavior towards all God’s creatures.

  • Mike says:

I think it’s a little unfair to say that conservatives dont care about animal abuse. I am a conservative and it is something that i take very seriously and try to change every day of my life.

  • Kurt K says:

Anon That is a good idea. I would go even further and recommend donating money to funds set up for his fallen teammates. I’m sure their families have charities set up in there names.

  • Anon says:

Even though it’s sickening to think about how Dasy died and what a sweet dog she must have been I have a lab myself who is also like a child to me the human aspect of this story hurts me even more. Marcus Luttrell is an American hero a trained SEAL who is still damaged from the war and Dasy was his only salvation in a sense. When he was in the hospital with severe injuries they gave her to him. And like he said she became like a daughter to him his only source of unconditional love. She also represented his fallen team her name DASY was an acronym for the nicknames of his team members. You can tell he’s on the edge right now and back in that war mindset staying up all night and expecting a war to start any minute. I think the best way to honor Marcus would be to make a donation to a charity that benefits dogs. I hope he can find some peace in his life and I hope these sickos and potential future serial killers pay to the fullest for what they have done.

  • Joshua Pegues says:

Our unfortunate NAVY SEAL friend Marcus surely hesitated to kill these four bastards because he is trained to do just that in a milisecond. Marcus obviuosley had respect for their lives enough to make him not pull the trigger when he had the opportunity. These 4 had no equal respect for life. They are some of the lowest of scumbags and I beleive they could easily turn their evil intents to small children. I am happy they are caught and shamed. I hope they are prosecuted and punished to the fullest and that this shame follows them forever.

  • Cecilia says:

I’m not a fan of Fox News but I’m glad that they cared enough about this topic as to actually take it seriously.

  • Charlie Lammers says:

I’m glad these scumbags were caught. I suspect that opinions vary widely as to what should be done with criminals who harm animals. Personally it would’nt bother me a bit if they received just as harsh a sentence as if they had taken a human life.

  • Liz says:

Um. Conservative.. Have 3 dogspuppy mill abuse cases and 2 rescue cats…want death penalty on second offense of animal cruelty. You get one chance to reform and that’s it. The rest of society WILL as a byproduct improve. They almost all start with animals then move to humans AND for every 1 case you hear about there are 5 or more that go without attention. Thanks!

  • mel says:

I am so upset about these boys killing Marcus’s dog! How dare they! Justice must be served for these murderers!! We need to stand up together against this execution Please dont let this case slip through the cracks! Lets SHOUT WE ARE MAD AS HELL AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!

  • Star808 says:

I’m so sick to my stomach right now….

  • Jeff says:

I hope these guys get the maximux sentence. Thank you for standing up for one of Americas heros. By the way…I like animals and I’m a conservative. Thanks.

  • Diane Lapkiewitz says:

He needs to do hard time in prison. The judge should throw the book at him.

  • matt says:

“unlike so many other conservatives” was a comment posted by Heather. An ignorant statement that has no place here when the focus should be on making sure these thugs get what they deserve. I know many liberals who are avid big game hunters. Thank you PETA for doing something.

  • Carolyn Frye says:

I hope PETA and other animal rights’ groups push for severe sentences for these cowards who killed Marcus Luttrells’ dog Dasy. These punks have absolutely no empathy for life and they sicken me!

  • Izbelle says:

Look at the website those rich foxhunting folk there is a picture of a coyote or something about to be devoured by a bunch of dogs. disgusting. look out for image 72

  • lewis norton says:

thank you PETA and your staff for your support in helping raise awareness to these two alleged murderers who took an innocent dogs life in such a brutal killing of this brave american hero’s beloved “DASY” may she rest in peace my heart felt sympathy to marcus luttrel. god bless you sir

  • N. Milner says:

These guys need to be locked up for as long as the law allows. If they lose the key that would be even better!OR better than that give them the same that they gave to Dasy and these poor dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BeckFan says:

I would like to thank you for posting the reward for DASY’s murderers. I know PETA and Glenn Beck don’t often see eyetoeye but it was touching for you to come through with the reward money. Thank you for caring for the animals.

  • Joyce Purcell says:

I sincerely hope that these guys are punished to the fullest extent of the law possible. Glad Beck brought it to TV and glad PETA’s involved.

  • Pinky87 says:

“Humans are the only species that feels empathy maybe perhaps for dogs” WTF I’m sorry that video makes such a big deal about this dog but they make it clear that if it were any other animal there wouldn’t be this outcry. It’s horrible that anyone would do this but we should have EMPATHY as they keep referring to for ALL creatures not just cute puppies.

  • Heather says:

I’m not exactly a fan of Glenn Beck but I do respect that he takes animal abuse seriously unlike so many other conservatives. Keep up the good work PETA. It’s nice to see those men brought to justice.
