Look Here, San Antonio …

Written by PETA | May 3, 2010

Forget the Alamo; There’s something else for Texans to remember—the imprisonment of Tilly the orca:

SeaWorld Billboard

Today, PETA’s billboard went up near SeaWorld San Antonio to remind Texans not to mess with marine mammals. Our plea to free Tilly and other captive wild animals comes on the heels of last week’s congressional hearing about marine abusement parks, to which PETA submitted testimony urging a ban on the confinement of orcas and other wild animals at SeaWorld and other profiteering prison-parks.

So what can you do? Remind everyone to steer clear of marine animal exhibits. And if you’re looking for an animal-friendly place to visit this summer, I hear the Alamo is an interesting place to go.

I live at San Antonio….and I would like to say that there are fish at the Riverwalk (in the river so they are captive)!!!!!! :O

  • President Obama says:

This is silly! Let’s Keep Tilly!

  • Dustin says:

So instead of watching animals, you go to celebrate an event in which hundreds of people died in a battle that had no purpose?

  • John J says:

Meg Thats a load of BS. If you work a job that you find morally objectional then how can you justify staying there? Your statement that persons who have jobs today are in no position to quit is too general. How do you know what position everyone with jobs are in? I’m sure Sea World pays ok but there are other jobs available. I guess the point would be if you choose to work at Sea World for whatever reason then don’t complain about the treatment of the animals there….just shut up draw your check and be happy you are feeding the kids.

Sorry to hear about the trainer. But…forceing animals out of their natural habitat and making them do stupid tricks for our entertainment says more about our intellegence not theirs. ….Photojournalist Louis Psihoyos

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

John those who are blessed enough to have a job right now are not in a position to quit unless they are well enough to support their families on one salary if they are married or have saved enough to not need a salary for a while. Then there are those who work not just because they need the money but because they need what insurance benefits their company provides. John I pray that you are employed healthy and stay that way because I know from experience that being an unemployed cancer patient is most unpleasant.

  • Sara says:

John when I said that my sister works at Sea World in order to get a paycheck I meant to imply that she doesn’t enjoy the animal attractions but she does get paid quite well so that’s why she stays.

  • griffindor pheonix says:

Great job its a wild creature and it should not be kept in a container for stupid peoples entertainment it should be free

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

My husband and I are seriously considering moving to San Antonio. The prospects for jobs in our fields are better there plus we can sell our home here and use the proceeds to buy a home outright in San Antonio. We have been there many times and enjoy the many animalfree attractions such as the Alamo and the Riverwalk.

  • John J says:

Sara you said your sister works at SeaWorld to get a paycheck…isnt that why most people work? So why doesnt she quit? If the death of that trainer really upset her then she should make a stand and stop supporting SeaWorld by working there.

  • Sara says:

I’m from San Antonio and I completely agree with what this billboard states. My sister works at Sea World in order to get a paycheck…when the trainer died she was so incredibly shaken.

  • Shari says:

  • Robin Leigh Adams says:

Thank you! Peta’s powerful voice and financial resources allow for such a visible and outstanding statement! My Facebook group A Call For the Release of All Captive Orcas is moving through smaller more localized circles but I have reached out to all corners of the globe and now have over 1400 members worldwide! I am pleased to be on the same mission and look forward to our concerted efforts making a real difference. Thanks Robin

  • Rachael says:
