Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress

Written by PETA | September 13, 2010

Last night, Lady Gaga tried once again to shock the world, this time by wearing a “meat dress” during her acceptance of the Video of the Year award at MTV’s Video Music Awards. Lately, Lady Gaga has been having a hard time keeping her act “over the top.” Wearing a dress made out of cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it—and that means a lot of young people will not be buying her records if she keeps this stuff up. On the other hand, maybe it was fake and she’ll talk about that later. If not, what’s next: the family cat made into a hat? Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn’t want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots—not too attractive, really. The stunt is bringing lots of people to PETA.org to download a copy of our vegetarian/vegan starter kit, so I guess we should be glad.

A wonderful side note to mention, Ellen DeGeneres (who is vegan herself), presented Gaga with a veggie bikini and suggested she try that next time she wants to make a statement. Thanks, Ellen!

I know this is old news by now, but did nobody else think it was an effective stunt for animal rights? of course it was gross, and just as bad as wearing fur, but i think it made people think of fur, leather etc. for what it is: meat, a dead animal.

  • i Linda says:

You stupid meat people! I am also a TRUE vegetarian and animals’ defender and such it’s obvious that Lady Gaga has insulted not only vegetarians but most importantly ANIMALS!! She’s basically saying they’re crap and underestimating the pain cows and other animals have to go through to be eaten especially to be worn as a form of fashion. If no one speaks up and no one “shoves it” down people’s throat, people won’t understand and stand up for animals ! Thus don’t be ignorant because we’re animals as well just the worst in the face of the earth. DEFEND ANIMALS AT ALL COST ABD SPEAK UP

  • Wth says:

She has her own meat why does she needs someone elses? She should wear her own instead.

  • Hmm says:

I believe she should have left the orans hanging out. Would that have made it any nastier? I’ve notice that 90% of the peta bashers onhere cannot spell, and they use incorrect grammer. It just indicates that they are very uneducated and, quite frankly, stupid.

  • Shy says:

If you truly don’t like PETA why are you on this site? Wouldn’t it be considered a waste of your time? I find it extremely rude, pathetis and immature for grown people to act the way some of the people that act like somebody is dragging them around and abusing them. They are the lowest of our race and deserve to be treated as such. PETA has the guts to show everyone what is happening to these animals. The human race has come a long way. We have developed in tech, society, religion, and more. However we are a selfish and uncompassionate race. We are by far the greater and more knowledgable being. However we don’t act like it. Treating the other species like dirt, walking all over them and spitting on them. If we don’t change our ways, then we as a race don’t even deserve to be here.

fyi mrslipperhat IF THAT IS YOUR REAL NAME! :) I am vegan and have been tracking my protein count. It is perfect for my beautiful HWP body. I don’t take protein pills (Or any supplemental pills) and P.S. They don’t call them “Factory Farms” for no reason. xoxo

  • MrSlipperHat says:

Peta. This world is a cruel place. If the world were to go to shit, lets see how long it takes before you decide to start munching on some delicious steaks with the rest of us. Because if the world goes to shit, you won’t have your protein pills, or your factory made nasty tofu. And the human body needs protein. So screw you peta!

  • veggiesaregood says:

    i thought it was hot…

  • Lolwot says:

Society is desensitized. They get humor out of trolling the sensitive. If PETA weren’t so obnoxiously upset about every little thing, people would pay more attention to them. I’m a vegetarian, but I don’t shove it down someone’s throat like religions do. They respect it that way.

  • Elliott says:

I am a big Lady Gaga fan, I am also Vegetarian. I see why people reacted to the dress that way, but you need to understand that although it had a message the fact that she wore meat isn’t as bad a eating it. I mean she was criticized for wearing that dress, however moments before that she was wearing a dress and head piece made entirely out of leather. I do see why she got criticized but why? So many other celebrities wear meat, there were probably thousands of dead animals being worn in that venue…

  • Dana B says:

unfortunately lady gaga wasn’t the only one who wore a meat dress, check out this horrific and sick story of a woman murdering her pet cat to go to a lady gaga concert: http://www.examiner.com/pet-rescue-in-national/disturbed-teenager-murders-pet-cat-for-gaga-concert-outfit That proves how blindly people would imitate celebrities!

  • Ali Vegan says:

peope who wear fur, that is what your ‘coat’ looked liked before it was murdered. If you wear fur, you wear meat just like Gaga.

  • MariaOlivia says:

So much hatred! Good lord… And meat dress?? Gross..

  • Rene says:

The dress was BBQ’d after tho. k thanks bye

  • Junkie says:

You do know she probably wore that because she hates you just as much as everybody else on the face of this planet, right? It worked. ;D

  • SunnyStegosaurus says:

It’s pretty sad that meat eaters have to bash NICE, CRUELTY FREE, animal-loving people with hearts big enough to consider living creatures other than themselves to make themselves feel better. I mean, really? They go out of their way to make hateful comments about vegetarians/vegans on PETA’s website. To what avail? You aren’t going to change our minds. So keep on eating your nasty flesh and we’ll keep eating our delicious fruits and veggies, and when we have lower cholesterol, more energy, and the amazing feeling of doing what is right, we’ll see who is really the “moron wasting their time”.

  • madison says:

Omgosh!! really who cares if your a vegan or what ever you are that was your chose and we accept that so when somebody shows what they believe just shut up and accept it bc we r all different people with crazy needs so accept one another and move on some people eat meat which is fine and some people dont which is also your own chose so leave each other alone and learn to embrace peoples diiferances i mean if a persons straight r gay usally people dont care so why in the world should we care what what one person eat or wear like really!!

  • anonymous says:

Firstly, It was pretty gross that Gaga decided to show up wearing meat. Also, anyone saying that it wouldn’t start to smell or rot in such little time under all those lights. Well, you’re wrong because you’re forgetting that she ALSO wore that dress right after to Ellen’s interview right after the award show which aired the following day. It obviously would have started to rot under all the lighting and heat. I’m not vegetarian but what I find pathetic is the fact that people are calling vegetarians morons? like, is that really necessary what so ever. Secondly, even if she was trying to make a statement there are many ways other than wearing flesh to an award show where MILLIONS of people are probably watching. Including her fans which some are vegetarian and animal lovers so it probably wasn’t her best move to show up on stage with that on.

  • KpNTeH says:

She uses visuals to emphasize her symbolism and this beats out the blood at the 2009 VMAs by far. Doesn’t matter if she wore the meat, it would have been eaten anyway and now it’s in the Rock n Roll hall of FAME.

  • Tabithagerken13 says:

Do you realize that Lady Gaga wore that dress for a purpose saying that women aren’t just a piece of meat. Do you research.

  • SatyrGLS says:

I really think that people defending Gaga after she did such a thing as wearing a meat dress should take some time to meditate. There are many musicians who actually created real masterpieces: take some time to listen to John Cage for a change. He was vegetarian and gay so people who think that all the LGBT fuss make Lady Gaga a candidate to a Nobel Price for Peace should like him… and maybe some music with actual meaning could bring them to the mental state of independent thinking. LGBT rights defence is not marketing!

  • DerpdeDoo says:

Pretty sure Gaga didn’t just cleave the meat off the bone and slap it on her body. It’s obviously treated, either dried or flash frozen, and I sincerely doubt it would be crawling with maggots in mere hours, especially considering how long it takes for maggots to actually start moving after their laid. And PETA doesn’t really have any room to call anyone ridiculous or anything like that, especially after that silly little Sea Kittens book.

  • Nychip says:

Normal people that eat meat have as much right to right here as a vegan my friends. If you don’t like it then don’t be a public web-site. I have to run my 28 oz T-bone steak is on the grill cooking and smells good. I think I will eat it rarer than usual in honor of pale plant eaters everywhere!!

  • Anon says:

I understand why PETA folk would be outraged, but the way I see it is that it is bringing into focus people’s attitudes towards killing animals. Most meat-eaters don’t really think about where there food comes from and the by products produced from it. In a sense it has raised awareness of items such as fur and leather and where they have come from and basically wearing meat has the same principles as wearing leather etc. Although animals were murdered to raise awareness and I know that is not what PETA believes in, it has and although it probably wasn’t the smartest idea that Lady GaGa has had, it has awoken many people to how these clothes are portrayed without the consequences for the animals involved.

  • Zizerzazerzzuz says:

To all anti-PETA people, if you dont like PEta, dont write. dont feel all badass, like, oh yeah, man, i wrote pro-meat comments on PETA, yeaaah. Meat is murder and so is fur. IF all youre bothered about is that oeta is pre-life and anti-meat-slash-murder, dont be an a**hole and be NICE :). GO PETA AND ME (VEGETARIAN)!

  • theman says:

PETA is all full of morons that think they can control people.. yea 1 out of 200 people I talk to are vegan.. your cause is really taking hold.. get a real career

  • xxPrincessxx says:

Just to get this out the way….yea I love Lady Gaga and honestly I don’t find anything wrong with the meat dress…I mean sure it probably smells she even said that she didnt wanna hug people because of it….and no im not some blood thristy meat eater…I don’t even eat meat that much…The reason I love that dress is because of the statement it makes….i have nothing against vegeitarians or vegans…people can choose their own lifestyle and shouldnt be jugded on it….Obviously Gaga didn’t intentionally wear a meat dress to piss you people off…it wasnt like she said to herself “hmmm….i’ll wear a dress made of meat to piss off the PETA group so they can hate me.” I do love animals….but it’s not like she killed the animals herself and it’s not she killed animals on the verge of extinction…her designer bought it from a butcher *cow meat* and made a dress….i honestly dont find it that big a deal…but people can think whatever they want…that’s one of my favorite dresses she’s worn…it’s awesome ~Born This Way~

  • beth says:

that is flat out nastyyyyy! who seriously wears meat on their body. I feel bad for the person who sat next to her at VMA.

  • ivy says:

I was astonished to see lady gaga in this gruesome outfit. This makes her seem like a very gross person. I will definately not be buying her albums any longer.

  • Lol says:

The article was a t least well meant, despite the lack of actual research. But the blind comments filled with unwarranted self importance make me cringe.

  • Online Butchers UK says:

Oh dear! This is bad. Meat is meant to be had, if you are not a vegan. This is extreme, and probably will upset more people than just the vegans this time.

  • mike says:

god that would look so good on my plate

  • sailornaruto39 says:

would this be here if it was leather? of if it was on her plate?

  • Luke says:

Look at this quote: Newkirk said if Gaga planned to sport this outfit again, she had a great idea. “The perfect accessory would be a PETA vegetarian/vegan starter kit. A lot of people will take one look and want one. It’s sending lots of people to PETA.org to download our kit, so I guess we should be glad.” Even if the dress turned only one person into a vegetarian. The meat that would not be eaten for the rest of their lifes would be much greater than the amount of meat used for the dress alone. As many poeple turned vegetarian as a result of Gaga’s dress, she may be sending a discreet message. Listen and watch closely before you label.

  • Luke says:

First of all the meat would not be riddles with maggots as it is the cleanest meat you can buy and it what later dries out into beef jerky (at least research before you write an article). The fact that all of you are talking right now about Lady Gaga is exactly what she wants you to do. The meat dress is controvesial, it gets everyones attention because it is entirely unconventional. So whether you agree with the meat or not, it doesn’t matter. You talking about it. And hence, Lady Gaga’s fame continues to grow. She can completely control society and her fame. She has mastered ‘the art of fame’. Also, she is and always has been an advocate for no-fur.

  • passiongypsy says:

While I am a person that eats meat, say what you will about it. But I was angry when I saw this cause while I eat meat I do love animals and hate the idea that a animal had to die just so Lady Gaga could have a dress. This to me is just disrespectful and there was no reason for it, especially since nobody payed attention to her message behind it, they only talked about the dress. Lady Gaga you didn’t need to kill an animal to get people to listen to you, they already were. And on behalf of us meat eaters I want to apologize for this because I respect your choices and this was disrespectful to them so again I’m sorry

  • LaneMercer says:

Sorry for this additional comment but ‘seriously ?’ . . I don’t take the high horse with anyone, after all the reason for being vegan is to entitle everyone to rights (animals included) . . No I would not condemn anyone or their ancestors. . . I can’t condemn anyone because I’m not in a position to . . But I will criticise people as much as I wish.

  • VegieLover says:

Meateater you need to find some compassion, in my opinion if someone has seen the cruelty that these animals suffer and can still dub meat as ‘tasty’, they should be locked up because if that doesn’t provoke empathy then nothing will and if they don’t have empathy then they can be linked to future serial killers. Fed up of hearing that one and now I’m inciting it . . I used to like Lady Gaga now I think she’s just a self-indulgent, media-obsessed, selfish bitch.
