Giant Carp Dies, PETA Is Relieved

Written by PETA | August 5, 2009 / CC

Benson, a giant carp and a celebrity of sorts in Britain, has died. Angling fanatics are blaming her death on nuts, and so are we. But we aren’t talking about peanuts, cashews, or pistachios—we are blaming the hordes of unhinged humans who hurt her for “fun.”

It is estimated that during Benson’s lifetime, she was painfully hooked and dragged from her aquatic home more than 60 times—that’s right, six-zero—so that anglers could pose for a photo and then fling her back into the water.

Isn’t it logical to believe that the pain and stress that she suffered over and over …

(and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over)

… again for anglers’ so-called “sport” were contributing factors in her death? Why yes, it is.

As our friends over at PETA Europe told BBC News, “If common sense isn’t enough, the science is clear: Being repeatedly impaled with a hook and yanked into an environment in which fish cannot breathe, like Benson [was], undeniably causes distress [and] pain and can lead to infections. Even simply handling or netting fish can abrade their protective coating and lead to death.”

I’d say that pretty much sums it up, wouldn’t you?

At least it’s no longer in pain…

  • Me says:

I understand that you are trying to get people to stop eating fish that’s fine. But please don’t call them “sea kittens” that’s confusing and to be blunt dumb. Kittens are baby cats fish are fish. You are never going to get people to stop fishing by changing their name. You should try to get people to be compassionate about fish as they are fish not as some fantastical creation “sea kittens”. Are fish any less important if they are named fish? I don’t understand this movement and I think it is utterly ridiculous.

What a sad end to a sad tale one of recreational destruction and total disrespect for wildlife. That poor fish rest in peace.

  • Brian Sharp says:

of course its sad when any creature dies but death is a natural part of life and in attaining this size and notoriaty’Benson’ had obviously lived way beyond his years. I’m a keen ecologist active member of shac and angler and I’m the first one to speak up when i see cruelty this is not one of those cases. I was lucky enough to see Benson for myself a few years ago and I have met the owners of the lake who have the utmost respect for the fish in their lakes. stop athrophmorphising these creatures learn about fish physiology visit the beautiful Bluebell lakes and met the anglers before you judge.

“animals are here for people to eat”….”animals cant feel emotions so they dont mind getting caught”….can someone please explain to me how people this unevolved to say such things are able to operate computers? How does anyone say with a straight face say animals dont feel pain? So unbelievably ignorant.

Poor Thing! She was a Beautiful Fish! When will people learn that “Animals Are Not Ours To Eat Wear Experement On Or Use For Entertainment”! Imagine being stabbed 60 times. I was in a Magazine Shop I saw that picure on an Angling Magazine I felt sickened!

  • Kurt K says:

Simara Most people do love and respect animals but the fact of the matter is some animals are here for humans to eat. I know you strongly disagree but I strongly agree with that statement. I think what ‘fishy’ was trying to suggest is that not many carp will grow to the size of ‘Benson’. In order to do so the fish has to be healthy and so does the ecosystem. Since ‘Benson’ grew to the size he did obviously the fact he was cought 60 times did little to no harm to his life. Fish don’t remember anything past a few seconds. Once caught and released they would have no recolection of what just occured. This fish in no way lived a terrible life my opinion is quite the opposite. Jen Z Fish don’t have the capasity for emotions so they don’t think much of anything about being caught.

  • Sue Lesmond says:

Id love to hook these sick creeps and drag them like poor Benson. RIP Benson.

  • Reverend Chong says:

  • Celeste gale says:

how pathetic do you have to be to pluck a fish out of water to pose with it? You simple minded idiots!! Why cant people just leave nature alone?

  • Cindy says:

Fishy you are a total tool!! Get a life! Why would you even be leaving a comment on an animal lovers site? Oh I get it you are a lonley bored uneducated idiot….. Yeah that’s it isn’t it Fishy???? Bet your really ugly too can’t get a chick so have to sit on your comp all alone seeing who you can piss off??? Right again!!! Your right Peta it’s enough that a fish gets hooked once and then dies just imagine doing it over and over……mmmmmmm sick! When we will this craziness end for poor animals? I quess the answer is never as long as morons like Fishy roam this earth.

  • Radelle says:

I’m So Sorry Benson. You certainly were beautiful….

  • Jen Z. says:

Yes “fishy” fish love getting caught and being hooked through the mouth and dragged out of the water where they can’t breathe then have the hook ripped out and thrown back in the water. Seriously. Think about what you just said…

  • simara says:

i SO look forward to the day when all non humans are cherished and respect and their lives are known as to be very valuable and precious. it WILL happen. it simply must

  • Susan T says:

Rest in peace Benson. Clearly you were far more evolved than the humans who tortured you. One day Benson your brothers and sisters will live free from torment. One day.

  • fishy says:

Maybe the fish liked getting caught the fish traded the bait for a few pictures since the fish was so huge it could not have been living in so much pain so leave fishing alone.

  • Brien Comerford says:

There will be negative karmic ramifications for the human torturers of the endearing and peaceful giant carp.

  • Nancy says:

What a terrible existence for poor Benson. I’m sorry she died but relieved that her suffering is over. When are people going to realize that fishing is hurtful?
