Fur Flies Over Miss Universe

Written by PETA | October 11, 2007

Check out the letter PETA Asia-Pacific sent the new Miss Universe, Riyo Mori, this morning urging her to stop with the fur already.

Riyo Mori
c/o Miss Universe Japan Office
5F Kitae Bldg.
5-9-13 Jingu-mae, Shibuya-ku
Tokyo 150-0001

Dear Ms. Mori:

Many of our members have contacted us to express their shock and disappointment over your use of fur. Perhaps you are confused about what is expected of you now that you have been crowned Miss Universe. Let us help you: As an ambassador of goodwill, your job is to promote peace, not pieces of tortured animals.

Animals trapped in the wild may suffer for days before dying from blood loss, infection, or attacks by predators. Some, especially mothers with babies to feed, chew off their own limbs in an attempt to escape. On fur farms, animals spend their lives pacing in tiny wire cages until they are killed by being anally electrocuted, gassed, or having their necks broken. Sometimes these methods only stun the animals, who often “wake up” while they’re being skinned. As you will see if you watch these videos, there is nothing upscale or elegant about how the original owners of the furs you flaunt met their gruesome deaths:

A recent investigation of fur farms in China, which is now the world’s largest fur producer, revealed that animals, including dogs and cats, are being bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, strangled with wire nooses, and skinned alive. Cat and dog fur is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from other species, so it’s impossible to tell which type of animal a pelt is from. The ugly truth is, no matter whose back it was ripped off, the fur that you’re profiting from came from animals who suffered miserable lives and unimaginably cruel deaths.

As Miss Universe, you are expected to be a positive role model who sets a good example. All eyes are on you. By choosing to wear fur, not only are you directly responsible for the deaths of dozens of animals, you’re also sending a clear message to everyone who sees you that animals’ lives are less important than fashion—you validate the fur industry, and you validate cruelty. Prove that your beauty is more than skin deep. Please do the decent and compassionate thing and stop wearing fur.

PETA is famous for pulling out all the stops to protest celebrities who wear fur; just ask Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. Having animal rights activists protest outside events you attend will do nothing to help your image. That said, there is nothing that we would like more than to sing your praises for being a compassionate trendsetter who chooses to go faux. Many entertainers and designers, including Sir Paul and Stella McCartney, Maggie Q, Charlize Theron, and Mariah Carey, have already shunned fur.

Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your response so that we can inform our members of your decision.

Sincerely,

Jason Baker
PETA Asia-Pacific

Mars In addition to any deliberate mislabeling issues there is also a big hole in the act. The Fur Products Labeling Act requires that any garment made of fur list the type of animals used and the country in which the animals were killed. However a loophole in the law exempts garments made with up to $150 worth of fur from being labeled. This means people can’t tell if fur is real or faux and fur may not even be listed at all on the label as a component part of the garment. Politicians are working to close this loophole. “Cat and dog fur is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from other species” Mars’ response To bad the truth in labeling act makes that illegal. Mars just because a law is enacted does not mean it is adhered to. Companies ignore laws all the time if it helps their bottom line. Fur mislabeling may be illegal but it is reality. As regards mandatory check laws I doubt trappers are any better at observing laws than Canadian seal killers who break Marine Mammal Regulations at every turn.

where are my comments to steve and mars? i want to defend myself and the animals!!!

where are my posts to mars???? i seriously start to doubt here! in this case i make my farewells! by by peta continue to fight the good fight and let the blog to the antibloggers!!!

  • Mars says:

Mike Q anytime you want or need facts regarding my hobby and former profession just let me know.

  • Kelley says:

MarsI do not understand your life. Why do you make a living from killing animals? Can’t you do something else? Surely you must have some sort of employment skills that would qualify you for better workperhaps you could seek out some sort of schooling to improve your chances of finding gainful employment??? Is there a community college where you live? I am sure they have some sort of classes you could take. It must be awful having to live like you do. Tramping around in the woods all day and then tramping on the necks of the animals you are responsible for killing. Don’t you wnat more out of life???

  • Ariel says:

“LOL I have been caught in my own traps. I don’t know of a trapper who hasn’t.” “Typical ignorance that PETA displays of hunting and trapping.” Comments quoted from two different blogs by the same space cadet. Need I say more?

  • ANONYWHO? says:

give you an idea make small adds in a piece of sheet with useful information about fur…and put them inside pieces of clothes made by burberry…and With a picture. YES!

  • Andy says:

Great letter!! Mars Illegal or not fur is mislabeled. Its obvious that people are doing it…. do you watch the videos??? As for the bloodloss many of the animals try to gnaw off the trapped body part to get away. That would lead me to believe there would be bloodloss which will lead to infection!! As for “mandatory” 2448 hour checks even if they were followed they dont prevent an animal bleeding to death or being attacked by another animal!!

  • paint you red says:

mars you are too stupid and you don’t understand anything from animals wolves are attacking their agressor and not just wolves also humans for this i’m agressing you and i enjoy hearing from you personally that you got trapped by your own traps and one day it shall be for the last time! rest in peace +

  • Don Quijote says:

mars nobody said that wolfs are agressing humans but i think that ‘paint you red’ considers you as a nonhuman maybe a heap of dead meat as a conclusion to your empty statements. you and steve just want us to accept your world a bit of vivisection a bit of hunting and a fine steak to the other readers fine for him not for me! Then your peace with peta would be perfect. but this means to water down all what we are believing in. for this we here stay on our principles and you are just loosing time here because also in 100 years peta’s principles shall be the same! out there most part of the people are meateaters so join them! what are you looking for here? our slogan is that every animal has the right for a respectful life and a respectful death! if meateaters agree with that they could at least help us to find humane slaughter methods. if not you are here on the wrong site! we don’t share our lifes with hunters and butchers! did you ever study the bible or other holy books or the biographies of famous animal rights advocates like giuseppe garibaldi victor hugo henri dunant or leo tolstoi who was a hunter himself before he started to think…. all the principles peta stands for were completely realized in the lifes of the greatest thinkers of this planet dante schiller goethe wagner kafka nietsche schopenhauer shaw dostojewski da vinci gandhi einstein hedin swedenborg rosa luxemburg sant kirpal sing lao tse sokrates plato ovid seneca hesiod al ghasali maimonides spinoza lincoln rilke byron milton george sand collette zola storm mark twain yourcenar lagerloef rinser canetti etc. etc. and you want to contest this! in the best case this is ridiculous in the worst case blasphemy! i’m sorry for recalling again our ‘reserviordogs’ as some antibloggers specified but would you ernestly think that the intelligentsia of the whole planet is just a crazy fanatic or worse as you call peta! these ideals grew up in other heads before us for to flourish now in this Animalrights Organization and it’s members and friends! so it’s really time for you to stop it or come back on another level!

From what exactly?Infection? The animal will not be in a trap long enough to catch an infection let alone die from one.Predators attacking predators is rare even if one is in a trap. Typical ignorance that PETA displays of hunting and trapping.

  • Desiree says:

i cannot believe the way Riyo Mori is representing herself. Wearing fur is cruel! Clearly she won that competition on beauty and not brains. Anyone with common sense at all would realize how badly the animals are treaten being starved left freezing then killed by giving them electric shocks up their anus. Who are the animals here? She clearly isnt a good person and neeeds to get a serious reality check. Shes no role model she should leave these animals alone and wear her own frickin skin! lets wake up and realize how barbaric this is. dont wear fur. Well writen letter PETA she would have to be pretty much the most heartless woman in the universe to continue this nonsense.

  • Dianna says:

I hope she makes the choice to go furless …. but if she is like Beyonce or J Lo … they are so selfconsumed they only see what they want. A distorted image of beauty. Like an anorexic person seeing themselves as obese. It really makes Bad KARMA to support such disgusting and heartless cruelty towards animals …. I believe what goes around comes around soooo be Kind

  • steve says:

dear paint you red…. this is what we non petaphiles always like to hear from you compassionate souls that would do anything for animals but wish death upon us common sensers…. a fact that possibly fred might have a wife children and pets but in the name of thou all mighty peta…. a wish for wolves to tear him apart……

  • MM62 says:

I wrote Miss Universe and got this comment back. What a bitch!! “Excuse me i don’t know where you get that info. But i don’t wear fur. You don’t even know me and stop telling me what to do. Because i don’t wear fur. Thank you.”

  • Stop Torture says:

email Riyo Mori httpwww.missuniverse.commissuniverseemail.html email the Miss Universe Organization MissUPRmissuniverse.com

  • Direct Action says:

Good letter. Maybe try to get former Miss Universes to protest her too. In fact if she does not stop but agrees with cruelty to animals like JLo and Beyonce then try to get her crown taken because someone who is barbaric and heartless should have no place with that crown and it would at least be a good point to make and raise publicity! In fact much stronger action needs to be taken against the businesses and people who commit the worst atrocities to make an example of them. Go send some people to visit some fur company executives and make sure they get the point well enough that they stop immediately. No? Well then they won’t stop. Yes big companies can be stopped when the president or such of the company gets given the proper motivation that fits the horror of skinning beings alive. Peta has the resources to see to it that those individuals in charge many at the same time receive that proper motivation.

  • Diana says:

Absolutely wonderful! With all of the synthetic materials available it is no longer a question of warmth. It is a grotesque fashion faupax that needs to go away. There is no level of stature in society that can justify killing harmless beings for the sole purpose of status quo!

  • Mars says:

LOL I have been caught by my own traps. I don’t know of a trapper that hasn’t.Wolves tear a human apart? You obviously know little of the animals you defend. If anybody gets attacked by animals it is almost always an AR trying to pet the cute “doggy” or “kitty”.

  • octopus says:

to dumbasshole fred what are you fucking up here fretting my nerves you foulmouthed spittle splasher it’s you who is harassing here bite the dust you sponge cake!

  • paint you red says:

mars now you are trapped! so you are a trapper! i hope from all my heart that one day you shall be trapped in one of your traps with 20 degrees down from zero and that you are freezing and some instants before dying you shall be found by a bunch of hungry wolfs and that they tare you apart but slowly and there you remain and nobody shall find you! amen!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Mars Do us a favor and when you trappers send her a letter with the “facts” post it on here if you’ve got the guts so we can have a go at it.

  • ts says:

hm if u think that’s harsh you do not need to be on this website. You’re obviously missing the point.

  • Cathy says:

In this day and age who in the world still choses to wear fur?

  • Fred says:

And I suppose Jason Baker is an expert on what Ms. Universe’s job is? Was he a Ms. Universe at one time? Now PETA is resorting to scare tactics and threats. I can’t believe that your organization openly threatens to harass people. You are al dumber then I thought. I hope she sues that pants off your assholes it will be just what you deserve.

  • kelly says:

She really doesn’t represent Japan well wearing ugly American housewife fashion

  • Tom says:

The letter was appropriate. Fur today will be viewed 20 years from now as the horrific and occassional headlines of a puppy being set afire or kittens being drowned in a bag today. There is no earthly reason to raise foxes raccoons and chinchilla in cages freezing and starving them from birth to death and then killing them with an electric shock inside their anuses to cloth humans. We’re supposed to be the good guys .. we have other materials to keep us warm. Let’s wake up people.

  • JME says:

Excellent letter! The only thing that’s harsh is the way that animals raised for their fur are treated. If Miss Mori doesn’t respond to this letter then she is ugly inside and her outward beauty is a waste.

  • kasie says:

    Well said.

  • Bob says:

When has Riyo Mori been seen in fur since being crowned Miss Universe… I work in the pageant industry and have not seen one picture. This is a pretty harsh commentary and one that is baseless in it’s content. I would almost say that the writer’s accusations towards Riyo Mori are bogus. Please provide proof before posting such accusations. Why would you single out Mori as she is not promoting the fur industry?

  • Niranjan says:

I too wrote Miss Riyo Mori but the email ID on PETA AsiaPacific seem to be wrong all email bounces back!

  • Maria Elena Bernal says:

Dear Miss Mori Perhaps you have not sat down to look at the horrific cruelty behind fur but you can make a difference to those that look up to you and please don’t dissapoint those that voted for you. FUR IS UNACCEPTABLE. Thank you.

  • Maureen says:

Lets not forget this woman represents a country that gives itself the right to murder whales against interational law and does not give a damn about what the rest of the world thinks. I loved the letter but I wonder if she is capable of understanding the suffering of animals no matter what the size.

  • sangriasmile says:

Great letter! I live in Asia and I can tell that FUR is IN here! Asians are completely ignorant or heartless can’t decide which to the suffering animals.I think they still look at animals as objects not beings that feel. Hope the letter opens her eyes and heart.

  • Ana says:

The fur industry is an abomination. So many animals die violent deaths freeroaming animals get trapped in barbaric traps animals are raised on fur farms in very cruel conditions and also cats and dogs have their skins ripped off of their backs for people’s vanity. Time for this bloody industry to come to an end. Sad to see Miss Universe opting for fur hopefully she will change her mind.

  • Mary says:

That’s a grreeaat letter! Thank you for telling it like it is! I’ll keep an eye on this…

  • Anonymous says:

To Comment Below Sometimes people need to see and hear the harsh truth of wearing and promoting fur. Wouldn’t you agree that what Miss Universe is doing is HARSH and that if she promotes HARSH fashion she needs a little more persuasion than just “Don’t Wear Fur”. The intent of this letter was to merley expalin to her that by choosing to wear a stigma item she is sending a message to all who see her that she is heartless and unphased by what goes on behind closed doors. Don’t think of this letter as harsh think of it as enlightening maybe Miss Universe would change her ways. You might think this letter is too whatever but it’s the sad truth and sometimes the truth hurts especially to the ones who have no voice!

  • Mars says:

More likely it was never actualy sent. It is just chocked full of PETA bs and typical falsehoods.Don’t worry though. We trappers will send her a letter with facts.

  • halo snipe says:

This is retarded PETA. Trying so desprately to attack and convert celebrities into their hopeless and vague campaign.

  • carolyn says:

way to go PETAwearing fur is not acceptable. Thank you for writing to her and reminding her. Fur belongs on animals she should wear her own damn skin

  • V. Soto says:

Thanks for posting Miss Universe’s address. I’m shooting off a letter to Tokyo today. It’s only .90 postage from the U.S. It’s well worth it.

  • V. Soto says:

“…Animals trapped in the wild may suffer for days before dying from blood loss infection or attacks by predators. Some especially mothers with babies to feed chew off their own limbs in an attempt to escape. On fur farms animals spend their lives pacing in tiny wire cages until they are killed by being anally electrocuted gassed or having their necks broken. Sometimes these methods only stun the animals who often wake up while theyre being skinned….” hm You say harsh? You may be directing your words to the wrong party. If you were an animal in danger of being killed for your fur you would be wishing that those truly making a difference i.e. PETA were more “diplomatic” about their message? Me I’d be hoping for help from anyone and everyone that had the power to raise awareness of my plight so that I could keep my life and my fur.

  • Wil says:

“your job is to promote peace not pieces of tortured animals” You have some fantastic writers.

  • Carla says:

Excellent piece of work the letter was perfect! I hope she at least watches the expose. Or maybe she’ll be too scared to. Some can learn alot if they just listen. Thanks couldn’t have said it better!

  • hm says:

wow. that was such a harsh letter. COuldn’t you have been more diplomatic?
