A meat processing plant in British Columbia found itself in deep doo-doo after a whistleblower let it slip that the company had covered up test results that found dangerous E. coli in a product sample. E. coli resides in animals' intestinal tracts and ends up in meat when—and there's no nice way to put this—their guts are ripped open during slaughter and their feces spill out onto their flesh, contaminating it.
The company's response was, well, crappy. Instead of wiping up its mess, it decided instead to a) call the whistleblower a stoolie, b) make its consumers responsible for cooking the poop-tainted meat enough to kill the pathogens, and c) drop its federal license, since provincial regulations don't require it to test for E. coli.
I can't decide which new slogan the company should adopt, "Quality is job number two" or "Manure—it's what's for dinner!"
In the U.S., there's a movement afoot to bring food safety procedures flush with current needs, but anyone who tells you that meat is safe to eat is full of … well, you know. Or as PETA's Dan Mathews put it, "Chances are good that unless you choose vegetarian, you're eating the 'poo poo platter.'"

I buy my meat and poultry from a local free-range farmer. They've had that farm for generations, and they are superbly sanitary with their process.
Meat free now since 12/22/10 and will be for the rest of my life!!! I am strongly against animal cruelty I have lost 10 lbs and feel great!!! This is really disgusting...anyone who eats meat eats poo!!! ewwwww!!!!
I can not believe people still eat animals in 2011.
E-coli is a bacterium that lives naturally in our digestive tracts. It's when it's exposed to air and reconsumed that it causes problems.
We can make ourselves sick, we can make ourselves sick, etc. Typhoid Mary is a keen example of this.
Only way to destroy it is to heat it until it kills the bacterium, hence why you're supposed to use hot water when you wash your hands.
We can't just blame slaughterhouses, we must take care of ourselves as well.
Animals aren't humans. but humans are animals.
Think before you hate! (sorry about my not perfect english)
It's shocking to see what people can do for taste and money..
Woah, there was E. coli in my water supply a while ago, but now that I know what it is, I'm terrified. I'll go vegan
OMG this is such not good news on the biggest tailgating day in Chicago!
Thanks for sharing!!
No excuse or reason for murder. No matter how "clean" you think meat is-- it still was an intelligent, sensitive individual that did not deserve to die for your selfishness. Get a clue--GO VEGAN,
