No calves on these calves! Donning nothing but a pair of boots and a strategically placed cowboy hat—both made from buttery vegan leather—actor Sofía Sisniega is showing some skin in her latest campaign for PETA. On World Environment Day, the Las Viudas de los Jueves star is calling for everyone to shun cruel cow skin leather in favor of innovative, high-quality, plant-based leathers made from everything from mushrooms and apples to cork and cactus.

Sisniega’s flashy campaign bares an important message: The only skin humans should wear is their own.

“No one needs to buy leather,” Sisniega says. “We can end this violent global exploitation of animals by always choosing animal-free vegan materials.”

Why Leather Is Cruel and Environmentally Destructive

Cows have empathy and form deep, complex bonds with other herd members. They form lifelong friendships and mourn the loss of their loved ones. In the meat and leather industries—which work hand in hand—workers castrate, brand, and cut off the tails of these sensitive animals, often without pain relief. Animals have their throats slit before they are dismembered and skinned, sometimes while they’re still conscious. A PETA investigation in Brazil revealed that workers branded cows on the face with no pain relief, and beat and electroshocked them before sending them to slaughter.

Leather production also wreaks havoc on the environment. Raising animals just to kill them for their body parts requires huge amounts of food, land, water, and fossil fuels. Animals on today’s factory farms produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population without the benefit of waste treatment plants.

Plus, the run-off from leather tanneries contaminates rivers and streams with pollutants such as salt, lime, sludge, sulfides, and acids. Working in tanneries has been linked to cancer, respiratory infections, and other illnesses in humans.

Prick the Right Choice: Wear Cactus, Not Cows!

Every animal is someone—don’t wear someone else’s skin, fur, or feathers. Vegan leather is chic, compassionate, and more eco-friendly than cow-based leather. Check out PETA’s guide to vegan leather to learn more about all the superb animal-friendly options on the market!
