With New French Law, Animals Are No Longer Considered Furniture

It’s hard to believe, but up until a few days ago, animals in France were classified as being on a par with furniture under a 200-year-old law. But a new law just passed by Parliament elevates domestic and farmed animals to the status of “living beings capable of sensitivity.”
PETA France and the animal welfare group Fondation 30 Million d’Amis have been working to get the law passed and praised Parliament’s decision. “This will change mentalities, notably among judges and prosecutors so that punishments are truly applied,” said François Legueulle of Fondation 30 Million d’Amis.
And since farmed animals are included in the law, it could also pave the way for more legislation that protects them. As they say in France, “Hourra!”
