PETA keeps racking up the wins for animals as mushroom grower and food packer The Giorgi Companies, Inc.—owner of Giorgi Mushroom Company, Giorgio Foods, Inc., and Giorgio Fresh Co.—has cut off support for all animal testing after discussions with PETA.

PETA scientists opened talks with the company, based in Blandon, Pa. and Wilmington, Del., after discovering loopholes in its animal testing policy that previously allowed it to provide support for experiments on animals, and the company compassionately agreed to update its policy to close those loopholes and ban any further support for animal experimentation:

“The Giorgi Companies, Inc. (including Giorgi Mushroom Company, Giorgio Foods, Inc. and Giorgio Fresh Co.) does not conduct, commission or fund animal or human research or testing.”

The company also joined PETA’s groundbreaking Eat Without Experiments program that helps shoppers identify food and beverage companies that don’t test on animals. It pledges not to conduct, fund, commission, or allow any animal testing for any purpose.

The company previously backed tests in which experimenters used genetically-modified mice born with immunodeficiency and injected them with cancer cells, fed them mushroom extracts, and took their blood before killing and dissecting them; fed white button mushrooms to mice bred to carry Alzheimer’s disease pathology and forced them to swim through a water maze before killing and dissecting them; and fed mushrooms to mice before starving them, injecting them with glucose, and killing them.

The Giorgi Companies is the latest business to end support for pointless experiments on animals after hearing from PETA, joining a long list of compassionate companies, including Oreo-maker Mondelēz International and Campbell Soup Company.
